Stick a drift in the cotter pin hole and use a wrench to tighten it, at some point it'll "stick" and you can proceed normally.

Re: tightning castle nut when ball joint spins??

When I did mine I just used a jack under the arm and put some pressure on the ballpoint and caused it to friction wedge into the spindle

Re: tightning castle nut when ball joint spins??

We just had this happen on a 92 & I use oversized washers to overcome the problem.

Stack them high enough so that there is enough thread to engage the nut but also so that the BJ is immediately pulled into the spindle. It should snug up quickly & then take the nut back off, remove a couple of the washers & repeat until it's seated enough so that it doesn't spin. Pull any remaining washers & tighten to spec + install the cotter key.

we had to use a puller and put the screw in part on the end of the ball joint, and pulled the pieces together kinda like a big clamp. be careful not to mess up the end of the ball joint.

I normally use an impact gun. It spins fast enough to overcome the balljoint spinning. If you dont have an impact you need to pin the ball joint shaft into the spindle.
