i had a grant after market steering wheel on my c10 truck, i am about to replace with old period wheel.
when i took the after market wheel off this cog thing was underneath,do i need to keep this on ? if so the new wheel will not fit any help please

I think that was some part for the Grant adapter but I have never seen one like it. It is definitely not original to the steering column.

can you just put the steering wheel on the splines and do up the nut

That's a column lock used in 70's GM columns, they probably used it for a spacer on yours if it is a mid 60 column.

just been doing a bit more reserch and its a locking plate,what i need to know is do you have to put it back on ?

Ohhhh it's a locking plate. That's interesting.

Do you have a 70's steering column or a mid 60's unit? No telling since it's not in your sig.

Cause my 64 doesn't use it.

it a camaro column 67-69 if thats any help

Ah, that's a big piece of the puzzle to leave out. I was thinking it was a stock C10 column. No idea on if you can leave it out, as I haven't worked with a Camaro column in years.

It helps keep the turn-signal cancel cam piece tight against the column's upper bearing. I would imagine it would be better to keep it on and if it didn't have it, find the lock clip[ to keep it tight in place.

There should be a spring underneath it. I don't know if there will be enough tension to keep the whole assembly from being loose once the retaining spring/ring clip is put back on (above the ring you are showing). Does that make sense? Not sure if I'm explaining it properly. You could try it.
