Was it only the 72 GMC grill that had the black paint? I need to get a new grill or rechrome my existing 72 GMC one. I really like the "full chrome look" and I don't really want the black paint. Do you guys think it would look ok if I rechrome right over where the black paint is supposed to be? or would that look tacky? would it be better to just get an earlier GMC grill?? help me out! thanks

I had my 72 GMC grill rechomed and plan to leave it all chrome. I think it looks sharp that way, unless you plan on a show truck. Now that the repro 72 grills are available, don't bother to have it rechromed. It's not cost effective.

the 71 and 72 is as you describe...I personally prefer the 68 - 70...but the 71/72 DO look better without the black paint.

Good, I do have some options, the black paint just takes away from the front end. I don't know how much the grill pieces cost down in the states, but up here they seem pretty damn expensive, I maybe rechroming would be cheaper with prices like:

new grill (new)- 510 usd
Top bar (rechromed exchange) - 190 usd
2 new headlight bezels - 115 usd

ouch... thats one expensive nose job...

Personal preferance I guess. I have a '67 GMC grill that has the GMC stamp on it. It's going to the chrome shop next week for a shiny new chrome job. Personally, I like the all chrome look. Especially on 67's and 68's since they don't have the chrome header bar and chrome side trim. I have heard some people don't like the GMC that is stamped in the '67 grill but, I kind of like it that way.

I have seen people do it. I think all of the dimensions are the same. You might have to drill a few holes to mount the chrome header bar.

I had my 72 grill rechromed and left off the black paint...looks fine. Unless the person looking is a truck nut off this board, they won't know the difference

You would be needing a 67/68 chevy/GMC hood to do this. Other than that, just remove you grill and 'eyebrow' pieces and instell your new 67 grill.
Hold onto your parts if they are in good shape. They still fetch a good price.

i plan to go back all chrome. i am told that there are some vendors out there that can get you an all chrome grill, i'm still looking. also i'm told that you can use lacquer thinner to remove that black trim paint, that sort of scares me but can anybody else out there shed some light on that idea. wouldn't that screw up that chrome surface? good luck and keep us posted.

quite a bit of the black paint on my grill has worn off already, but the rest of the grill is just looking tired, some rusty spots too. So if the 67-68 grills won't work because of the hood angle, would 69-70 grills bolt right on to my 72??

My '72 grill is being rechromed now. The first time They didn't do a very good job so they are doing it again. I'll let you all know how it came out. I told him if it wasn't perfect this time then I wanted my check back.I'm also having the rear bumper bezels eyebrows all done for $900. Good price but we'll see if they can do quality work.

THAT ENGINE IS NOW BORN AND HOWLING LOUDLY!
