Plan on taking out my cab tank this weekend. Have new paint and no dough to paint if I install a patch. REALLY don't want to run around in primer. Thinking on just cutting off the filler neck letting the gasket hold it in place. Think it will work? Any ideas?

I don't see why that wouldn't work. I'd cut the neck off and push it in to the cab so the gas cap sits as close to the rubber as possible.

Chickenwing,

I did the same thing on the filler neck for my 'extra' tank on my CST. I put a new gasket on it so it looks better but it is just a 4 inch piece of filler neck with a cap on it. If someone tried to siphon from it, they would be sucking a lot of air since it's open to the inside of the bed.

I don't know if you have full service gas or not, but you might want to put something on the inside of the dummy filler neck so someone does not stick the nozzle in & fill up the cab @ $2.50 a gal.

I got a cut neck off another tank sitting in the rubber piece and it hasnt moved for the 10 plus years its been in there. Just put the locking cap from the tank I took out on it. I cut it so it is sticking out the same length that it was when the tank was in it.

hahaha that would probably be the guy that insisted i had a desiel at the gas station when it was just a tired 250. he actually argued with me about it!!!

LOL, Roger that. Think I will tack the cap to the neck and put an inop sticker on it. Otherwise, I'd be posting in the "keep your wife outta your truck" thread.

A locking cap would work OK too. Not as nice looking though.

I pulled my tank, and set the cap on the rubber gasket. Then I laid a long bolt across the cap on the inside and cable-tied the ears on the cap to the bolt. It's been there for a year with no problems.

I have a friend that did the same thing to his truck. He lent the truck to somebody that put about 5 gallons into the cab.

I would weld up the end that is inside the truck, therefore no gas inside the cab. I would also weld a flange to that end to allow you to JB weld it (or use the glue that is used to install windshields) to glue it to the inside of the cab. Just my $.02.
