Transmission Question

I was looking at a 1988 5 speed manual transmission out of a camero and was wondering if anyone has put one of these in a truck of 67 to 72 era? If so what problems did you run into and do you think its worth it to install one?
Thanks,
JRB

Re: Transmission Question

Gr8scott has one in his. I'm not sure which engine he took it off of. I would think the 305 would be linked up to a stronger trans, but the 2.8 or 3.4 might be as strong (or weak). Whatever he has it's worked great for him, but he doesn't romp on it either. I'm planning on doing this down the road also.

Re: Transmission Question

That is the T-5 tranny, onless you have a weak in the knees stock motor, or better yet, an inline, i would advise against it. The run of the mill t-5 is rated at 280 ft pounds, and the best ones are only rated at 305 ft pounds.
There's areason this tranny was NEVER offered bolted to anything bigger than a 305.

Re: Transmission Question

You'd be much better off installing a NV4500 (out of a fullsize truck of the same era) IF you have a motor like Longhorn Man said. If you have a six popper or stock 305, go for it. The only problem is the NV4500 are hard to find and expensive, even in a 'yard. I gave up trying to find one at a reasonable price and ended up installing a 700R4. Althought I wish I had searched a little harder, I miss driving a "stick shift."

Re: Transmission Question

What about the gertrag? I have a 5-speed out of a 91 x-tra cab. It is behind a 350 so I am using it, just thought I'd pass along another alternative to the nv4500. They make t-5's that can hang, but they cost $2-3000. I believe a universal is under $2k, but it is NEW and will hold the hp and torq

Re: Transmission Question

Thanks for all the input. I am just kicking around maybe putting a 5 speed in the 69 and I saw a t-5 for 400 bucks. I think if I am going to spend the money I might just get a 700R4.
