Post Maual Steering Box

I have a 71 Chevy with Manual Steering. I was told by a mechanic that I need a new steering box and pitman arm before it would pass inspection. I bought a new box from a guy on Ebay who said it would fit a 67-72 truck. When I compare the two they are not identical. The new box has a longer shaft for the pitman arm and a shorter shaft coming out to the rag joint. Is there any way to identify the numbers stamped into the metal on the steering box to see what this is for? The #'s are 5673569 and 5666723 and 182. Any advice would be welcomed. I hate the thoughts of forking out 200 to 250 for a manual box.
