Re: who makes a good air bag kit

Check out the stickies in the suspension forum. Suicide Doors has a special going on 4 bags and plates/cups for the front. This deal does not include the tank, compressor, controller, lines or fittings. SD also has some "complete" kits on their website.

While you're there, cruise around and search, there is alot of great info in the suspension section.

These look great, however I should probably caveat that with saying i am a complete novice at lowering vehicles and have no idea what I need. I can turn a wrench on anything, but this I have no experience. Is there one better than another for lowering the truck? I still want to be able to use it as a truck but want the ability to lower it as far as possible without cutting the frame.

Dropped spindles, and lowered rear springs would be the best way to start. Air Bag suspension can be too complicated if your a novice, plus you have to modify your frame, and do fabrication.

Re: who makes a good air bag kit

Chuck,
What year truck are you working with?
Does it have rear coils and trailing arms?
If so, it is a pretty basic deal. you need brackets and cups on the front. the brackets will require drilling and bolting to your cross-member and the cups just sit in the lower control arm spring pocket. Also you would probably want to run drop spindles also. The rear (with control arm suspension) is fairly simple, you can replace the coil with an airbag. just have to drill some holes in the bottom of the frame and find/make a large washer for the underside of the control arm. you would want a bag that has a threaded hole in the middle of the bag and not a stud.
then there is the air supply and controls (valves, switches, ect)
where sky is the limit....you can go basic or load it up with bells and whistles....just up to your desire and size of your wallet....

Re: who makes a good air bag kit

Im working with a 66 long wheel base. its got coils for the rear. I was wandering about the jeep coils.. do they work well? I was thinking if they did I would use air shocks and pump them up when I need to haul, and drop them when Im done. Im really going for the cali rake.. a little lower in the back than the front.

Re: who makes a good air bag kit

yeah the jeep coils are softer and ride nice........the air shock idea would work as long as you aren't carrying a lot of weight

The California look is dumped in the front. The low riders drag ass with there hydraulics. With some lifted trucks it called a Pre Runner look with the front higher than the back..

Re: who makes a good air bag kit

I agree with what the other opinions are about the various ways of lowering your truck, but back to the original question of bags. Its not the kits that are good or bad, its the installation of the components. Some could argue about different components, but the details are what make them reliable and safe.

That's a Slam Specialties with a 1/2" port. They're $85.00 each plus shipping.

Your right. I repaired a lot of electrical, and fabrication's from "hacks". That keeped me very busy, and eventually one by one they went out of business.

Re: who makes a good air bag kit

I guess he figured his out. That's great. If the thread hasn't died, I'd like to get my 86 c10 lwb in shape. Right now, it is stock. I was thinking of getting it lifted 4" so it would look cool and I could put bigger, wider wheels on it. Just because I would be putting that much money into the project already, (cheapest I have found for a good one is about $500 with shipping) I figured it wouldn't be that much more expensive to just bag it and have it raise up to 4" and drop down when I use it for work. I think I saw that there are bags for load leveling so they would work to keep my truck looking level when I tow a big load. I checked out suicide doors and like the price for their cheapest kit and bags but this may not fit my truck at all?

Either way, I figure a good tank and compressor will double for using air tools and if the controls can let me drop the front and back or even each corner independently then it will be that much more of a cool ride. My hope is to install this with some buddies assuming that if I lift the frame up enough, the suspension can be worked without any problems. Any suggestions are appreciated and please let me know if there is an especially worthwhile kit. I don't think I saw one with brackets to mount the bags so that may raise the part cost that much. Feel free to send me an email: badassissimo@gmail.com. Thanks.
