I will be changing heads and cam on my 69 c10 next week. I can't decide if I should pull the engine out or do it while it's in the truck? I am leaning toward pulling the engine out just to be easy on my back. Maybe I am getting old, because few years back I wouldn't even think about it. What's your prefference when doing top end on 67-72 truck? Pull it out or not?

Well, since its a fullsize, you've got pro's and cons of both.

Being its bigger vehicle, its easier to access all the bolts and mounts and such and makes the engine easier to pull out.

But, then again, with all that room, you've got extra room to do the work with the motor in the truck still.

Yanking the motor will probably be more work. But should be easier on your back.

I've done head/cam swap on my v8 S-10 before with the motor still in. Wasnt worth it to me to pull the motor.

I don't think it's worth pulling the motor unless you are planning to detail the motor or take care of other things. I'm planning on swapping heads soon with the motor still in. My cam swap did not require pulling the motor either.

Save your back !! Pull the motor. It will provide a perfect time to detail not only the engine but the engine bay as well. Jim

I would pull the motor and put it on an engine stand and do whatever is that you want to do to it then drop it back in...

me honestly.......i would pull the motor. its easy to get them out and back in. it would be better to have it sitting on a stand to do what you need to do.

With an impact and a knowledge of the truck. You can pull and engine and trans out in less than an hour. Good time to change tranny fluid and filter while its out. I say pull it if you have an engine stand.

How many miles are on it?They say an upper rebuild on a high mileage motor will cause premature bearing failure because of the increased compression.
I know its hard to know where to stop when doing a partial repair but if your gonna pull it out anyway whats a few more dollars.LOL

After taking radiator and everything on the front I simply ran out of room in the garage. I didn't want to leave anything outside. My neighbour had a battery stolen overnight. So I just pulled the heads. I am almost done. I am taking a break with a few cold ones and will work on it later tonight.
