Gm Ignition WIring

Guys i need a little help please. I have rewired a vehicle completely with a painless wireing box. I am using toggle switches and a starter button. It has the gm steering column plugs. I am really not sure how to wire it up. Will someone walk me thru please.

I will be using a

toggle switch for ignition
starter button for the starter
toggle switch for the electric fuel pump
Toggle switch for all other accesorys

What wires go where on the switches?

What a nest of snakes this is. Which vehicle are you rewiring? Which GM steering column? Is this a race car? Are you attempting to cut into the harness to splice the switches in series? Which Painless harness? I'd like to help, but I'm lost in this.

I thought the same thing. Why not use the key switch and relays?

Re: Gm Ignition WIring

Sorry guys. I am starting from scratch on a 1951 Jeep cj3a. It had the stock non fused harness. I ripped it out and am installing a painless 18 circuit Gm harness. The jeep has the stock column in it. Its just a steel tube with no place for turn signals or the GM ignition plug. So i am basically starting from scratch.

All i want to do is wire a toggle for acc.
Then a toggle for ignition
And a push button to start it.

Thanks for the help. Sorry i wasnt real clear before. I took the harness out of a car i stripped last year.

Re: Gm Ignition WIring

This sounds like a neat project! Post some pics, if you ever get a chance, please.
Vettevets idea of relays is a good one, the relays can be installed near the item (starter/lights/ect) and small diameter wire can be used to carry the signal to trigger the relay.
A wire diagram is needed to figure out which wire you need to tap into to do what. "18 circuit GM harness" is kinda vague, but I think the diagram posted in the FAQ at the top of this forum page will be close enough. If it has the same number of wires in the column harness as yours, try it. If not, try to identify what year your painless harness is, a diagram for that year will be needed. Hope I've helped.

Heres some pics for ya shadetree

Its a 1951 Cj3a Willys Jeep. Stock 350 with a 3 speed. Since these pics i have installed a rollbar. I am almost done with installing a painless wiring system, i chucked the generator and installed a alternator. Also i converted it over to hei. Thinking i might put recessed led tail lights in. Soon it will have 4 inches of lift with 33 inch mud tires.

Yeah i have been into jeeps for a while. Its really alot of fun driving it. I cant wait to cruise on summer nites. I gave 500.00 for this one. You can find them pretty cheap. It just takes some hard looking....just like anything else. Now go start looking for that jeep. BUT dont forget you have a chevy pu to play with. Im just alternating projects.
