Drivetrain whine

Happy New Year everyone!
Replaced motor mounts about a week or two ago. They were WASTED. Since then, I have a "whirling" or "spinning" noise (for lack of a better description) coming from the tranny/TC area. When it happens, you can also feel it when putting hand on TC shift knob and tranny shifter. Never happens when cold (yet). It only occurs after driving for 15 minutes or so (warmed up) but will "spin" for 15 seconds, then quit. A minute or two later it starts again and quits after 15-30 seconds or so. The noise will always stop if I let off the throttle. It also kinda changes pitch when I hit a bump. Does not happen at any certain speed or RPM....but never had it do it at low speeds (10-15mph). Actually, it sounds a lot like when I had a speedo cable go bad on my older Buick.....that spinning noise.

Both Tranny/Transfer Case were drained and filled a month or so ago with 80/90W synthetic. Both are at proper levels....bottom of fill plug hole.

Any ideas? Tranny/Transfer case mounts need to be replaced? Driveshaft problems? Looking for ideas what to check. What do ya guys think?

Oh.......and its not just the slack in one of the shifters rattling like most of these 4x4's do........that actually quit pretty much after putting the new motor mounts in. I was diggin' that. It is a very pronounced spinning or whirling noise.

gman,
I know you said it isn't slack in the shifters but just try this once...
Put a chopper or a work glove over your shifter the next time you are going somewhere. I've seen all but one drivetrain whine cured by this method.

The one other time it was in a 77ish 3/4 ton with a 400 engine, th400, and a NP203. Before my friend owned the truck somebody replace the flywheel with a flywheel out of a yard with "350" painted on it junkyard style. He got the correct flywheel and the noise went away.

I'd try the chopper first. Don't cost nothing.

Must be a local term. A chopper is a leather mitten with a removable or sewn in knit mitten. By far the warmest thing for your hands in the winter.
