Question Front-end + steering questions

I have some questions about front end and steering I'd like to ask.

First, what are some good ways to inspect tie rods, control arms, bushings, etc. for wear and need of replacement? I know about lifting the front end, and checking for play in the wheels, but aside from making sure the components are lubed that's about all I know. I don't really know what to look for, and it's filthy under there...

Second, when I do check for play in the wheels with the front-end jacked up I notice some play, then slight rotation of the steering shaft through the steering box. Does this indicate excessive play in the steering box? How do I diagnose problems with the steering box and power steering pump in general?

Thanks-
