What is this thing on top of the engine?

In this picture, what is the thing on top of the engine that looks like a big alternator, but has no belt?

Is it an AIR pump? Sorry, I'm from Canada, so I've never seen a Kalifornia-equipped truck.

I could make a Clinton reference, but I won't :-)

Oddly, my Canadian-only shop manual for the 1969 Parisienne, Laurentian, Beaumont and Acadian shows it. I've never seen one on a Canadian car of that era, though.

I might as well contribute some trivia; as you guys all know, the Mark IV big blocks, when in GMC trucks, were call "Invaders". In Chevrolet cars, it is the Turbo Jet. When they were in Canadian Pontiacs, they were Astro Jets. I actually don't know what they were called in Sprints.

Anyway, when I was restoring my 427 car, I actually found a set of NOS air cleaner cover emblems; they're really rare, because they're embossed, and of course, limited to Canadian cars.

I should have know better than ordering them from a guy in Quebec, because when they arrived they were

"427 Flame Jet"

I guess that's Astro Jet in French! Who knew they localized air cleaner decals into the local language...

actually, a complete AIR setup like pictured is quite a rare bird. those setups were one of the first things taken off and pitched.
