Ignition coil

Hey gang. I have been given an MSD Blaster 3 ignition coil, and I think I want to put it on my 70. The question I have is, the stock coil has a condensor on it and says "use with resistor". should I (a) leave it like it is (b) put the resistor on the new coil or (c) install the new coil without the resistor? I've never seen a coil with (what looks like) a condenser on it. Oh what to do...

Re: Ignition coil

The "condenser" is most likely some sort of static suppressor but I'd go to their web site and see if I could dig up info on it. The wire that is now running to the coil from the ignition switch should be a resistor wire and if you turn the key on and check the voltage at the coil it should be somewhere around nine volts if memory serves right. Someone else may be able to tell you exactly what the voltage should be though.

If the ignition wire to the coil does have 12 volts you will need to put a ballast resistor in the system though.

Re: Ignition coil

The cond is a radio interference supresser. The system has resistance built into it but you will need to check with MSD to find if there coil requirs an external resister. When you make the test Mr48 is refering to the points must be closed or ground the neg. of the coil.
