Whats up with this ?

After cleaning and painting the engine bay for the big block transplant this caught my eye. The VIN on the frame has the last two digits 39 ground out slightly and the next corresponding numbers 40 stamped right under the original ones. The VIN on the cab matches the 40 and does not appear to have ever been tampered with. Odd dont you think?

Re: Whats up with this ?

Could be a factory change due to a mistake. Maybe the gang holding the stamps did not get changed for this chassis, then once it was stamped and noticed it was changed. There are other stamps on the frame, not sure were. Curious what those look like.

Re: Whats up with this ?

I think the frame is also stamped around the front body mount area on th top of the rail (basically on the drivers side of the cab) , but I could be mistaken.

Re: Whats up with this ?

On the left frame rail, mine is stamped in the engine bay area, and underneath the cab.

Haha! GM screwed up. Must've been a Friday truck. Everyone wanted to go home and have a coolie pop.

Re: Whats up with this ?

Could have been a factory mistake (it sometimes happens) but absolutely should never have been ground down.

The factory requirement for repair of mistakes is that they be "X'd" out using an X stamp over the mistake and the correct digits stamped below.

Re: Whats up with this ?

better than my one ton... the frame is one digit younger than the cab, and never corrected on the frame.
It's not common, but not unheard of either. It just came up on here less than 3 weeks ago

Re: Whats up with this ?

Thanks for all the comments / opinions. What everyone has suggested is also what I was assuming / hoping. This doesn't bother me in the least just kind of adds to the uniqueness of my project. I dont want to be just like any particular style or forum just doing it the way I like. I'll get some photos up soon. Oh by the way it's a 69 swb fleetside 6cyl. 3 on the tree soon to be BB turbo 400 that i've had since 97 used to be my DD but been setting in the garage since 06. Can you say procrastinate...

That was usually the failure mode: we'd get out of sequence by one digit.

The problem is by the time it was noticed you wouldn't have just one vehicle that was messed up - you'd have a whole line full of them.

We would try to catch them all by working the line back while it was running or, if you were lucky, it happened right before lunch or a break or end of shift and you could make the repairs with the line stopped.

Obviously the intent was to catch them all but it's easy to imagine one or two escaped.

Longhorn - were was that particular truck built?

Looks like an Atlanta-built 1969 (If I'm reading it correctly).
