Extreme Drops

Ok... Those of you w/extreme drops, if your truck (or your car) is dropped alot (trucks @ 6/8 minimum), I'm looking for some honest, real world answers.

Specific to these trucks, Dropmembers, Scott's IFS, Z's, and/or other chassis mods can get you inches off the ground & do look sweet. Beyond that, how much do you really drive your vehicle? Do you just do the in town & local cruise nights (bikers call them 'barhoppers')? Power Tour/s? Cross country road trips to board meets?

I'm curious as to how many actually put 300+ miles in a single stretch in their extreme dropped 'hot rods'??

In 2004 I drove my last shop truck which was a 1955 chevy p-up known as
heavy metal.Drove from Ventura ca to Goodguys indy took 3 days and took on
alot of rain with no top it was a complete blast and the crowd at the show thought it was cool as hell.

I havent gotten my dually to scrape anything yet, probably because of the 29" tires. I dont even have to slow down for big dips in the road but I do out of habit .

Daily drove my '70 for about a year with spindles/springs front and bagged/blocks/c-notch rear. Back and forth to work, daughter to/from school, Home Depot, you name it. It was my only transportation.

My only real problems came when I took it off pavement. Dragged the lowers a few times on driveways/curbs and almost got stuck on a rainy day at the metal scrap yard.

All that to say it's do-able, but I'm much more comfy in my Yukon...

I usually don't drive anything normal. All my stuff has been 6/8 drops so I know the in/outs of the daily grind but was curious how many others actually put road trip type of miles w/their Dropmember/Scott's IFS/Z'd set-ups.

I've daily driven a 5/7 drop on a '90 short bed and several 4/6 drops on 73-87 trucks.
Never anything as low a 6/8.
So I'm hoping with the extra ground clearance of the Dropmember,... I'll be able to drive my next truck anywhere.

ive driven my truck bagged laying crossmember for 5 years, daily driver... z'ed and backhalf for a year. driven from AZ to Co then MS and back to AZ.. just added a hitch looking to tow a trailer which now has my old stepside bed on it

There we go.... I like that it's getting used.

Tell me what you did on your driveshaft & how has it worked thus far? How about some recent pics (I remember it going together a while back but haven't seen much recent stuff). Anything significant you'd change in retrospect?

Scot- I know you know my buddies Mikes truck that was once owned by Forum member Greens69. You have seen it in the mags, and at lots of shows.

I know it has seen its share of time on a trailer, but the lest two years or so I have seen it driven to a lot of shows. It went to a run in Austin, Galveston, Wolf Creek, and several others with us last year.

He does raise it a bit when the roads are rough, but on smooth stretches of pavement I have seen it cruise for many miles just inches off of the ground.

I've driven my dropmembered truck to houston and back from austin and I take 60 mile round trips to my parents house on a regular basis. I drive it to the grocery store, hardware store, cruise ins, car shows, whatever.
My truck is no fancy show piece but sometimes I do have to trailer it for long hauls if I have alot of friends or family going. I don't have front inner fenders right now so I try to keep it off of wet roads or gravel so I don't get my shiny engine all nasty.
I'll be driving it around during the lonestar roundup which is coming up and I'm planning on cruising on over to the texmex show 2 weeks later.

I drive my Suburban daily, except for now when it's salt season up north here. I have maybe an inch and a half between the rear axle and frame and up front it's lowered around 5" or so. I plan on removing the inner fenders and "pancaking" an extra front crossmember I have once spring rolls around. I also plan on running bags all around, maybe some sort of AOL type kit for the rear until I can figure out how to notch it and not lose a bunch of frame strength.
But, for now, when I drive it, it bottoms out all the time. It's actually kind of unsafe I first realized that when I took it for a test run the day I dropped it. It still had the stock 235/75R15 front tires and it bottomed out going around a corner at about 45-50 and I just about went in the ditch. Since then I have gone with smaller front tires but the real fix is to remove the inner fenders and come up with something else. As far as the rear, I have air shocks so I can adjust the ride height a little bit for extra clearance but the real fix is an AOL kit or 4 link or something.
Even with all the problems driving it low, I drove it to a car show a few weeks after lowering it. I was about 400 miles, round trip. The ride was a bit bumpy, but I was still grinning the whole time!

I drove my '49 30 minutes down the interstate once. .5" off the ground.

after I got most the bugs out I dont see why I can't cruise for days. I even have cruise control

I daily drive a 2001 seirra ext cab that is 6/9 on a 30" tire, so it tucks about 1-1.5" tire all the way around. Thats dedication.

I drove an 02 Silverado xtnd cab on bags and Foose 22's about 65 miles a day back and forth to work. Mainly highway but drove it Mon-Fri. Loved it!!

My 77, current project, has front DM and a couple days from now, will have a rear DM. I plan to drive it often, not everyday, but all weekend and when the wife sends me on errands during the week... I'm on it!!

If it's done right why not drive it, that's why they put a motor in the thing!

It can't be any worse than driving it to work for the last few months before I put shocks in it.

that '49 is way cool

Not to get too far off topic, but did'nt you have an 81-87 red rcsb GMC with a 89-91 grille on it that was real low?

I had mine built to drive and not to show.....I am not sure I will drive it over 300 miles in one shot all the time but if I get the chance I will. After Nates done showing mine off when it's done I doubt I will ever show it. I am hoping I can drive it home from AZ to SoCal when its done. 400 miles.

If I'm in town and it ain't rainin, THE AUX WILL ROLL!!!!!!!!!!
