Gas guage on 1953 belair HELP
New sending unit a few years ago.
Guage is almost always on full but sometimes jumps around..what the heck? How could I figure out if the sending unit is no good, its a bad line (groundded somewere etc, or the guage is bad?) thanks!

The best way is to pull the sending unit out of the tank and test it with a volt meter. You should get between 0 and 30 ohms between the sender wire terminal and the mounting flange as you move the float arm up and down.

Not to sound like a smart aleck kid..lol
The sending unit came with the new tank approx 2 3 years ago and 'supposed' to work with either 6 or 12 volt systems (car is original 6 volt for time behing..) Im thinking a bad wire...gas guage pegs F when you turn the key on....

Re: Gas guage on 1953 belair HELP
If the sending unit wire is not connected to the gauge then you will get the symptoms you describe. Or if the sending unit is not grounded the same indications will occur. Try grounding the wire that goes to the sending unit terminal and see if the gauge drops to empty. It sounds like the ground side of the gauge is not connected because as you say, it may be a bad wire.
