How many Hour's Labor.........

Trying to prove a point with someone.........So here's the question how many hours roughly do you think it would take to rob a donor cab of these parts and install back into another truck also include new inner and outer rockers, floor pans, cab corners, kick panels and taking all cab, bed sides,and doors down to metal and sealed with epoxy primer........Also to get the bed shown bocked and ready for paint.......Also install new bottom skins inner and outer and doors blocked and ready for paint......

I would agree it would take at least 1000 man hours to do that. That's one guy, 8 hours a day 5 days a week, working on nothing else 6 months do do that job.

For me? like Protrash said 5 years and it wouldn't be as nice

It looks like you guys do really good work by the way.

Think I need to bring my bed to loganville GA, I'd say 1 month and 4 12 paks if you have a slightly over weight girlfriend, if your married 4 months, 1 case a beer and a handful of viagra......

Being serious now, from start to in primer ready for paint, eight hours a day, and I`m really guessing 1,200-to 1,500 hours, but then I guess that depends on how fast you work.

I am doing something similar with a cab for my truck been at it for about 3 months now after work and weekends. Probably a little over half way there. Have installed new floors, rockers, cab corners, dog legs, kick panels, went from a small hump to a big hump (now one piece fully removable) welded a bunch of holes shut, and patched some other rusted areas. Still have lower door skins, a replacement dash, and more holes to fill, then on to prime, sand, paint, etc... This is not a quick job.

I am going to guess between 960-1100 hrs .. you and I had this discussion before , but it was not in my message folder... I would figure one man 40 hrs a week 6 months.........
And of course you have posted this because the customer thinks it could have been done in 2 weeks at Macco...... "It's how much" I can hear it now....

The only time I've ever gotten in trouble is when I dropped a vehicle off somewhere and said, "Fix it", then didn't check up on it or the current price of it until it was done.

I go both ways on these issues. On one hand the customer should drop by every week and check the progress, then on the other hand I think that would be bothersome if I was the one working on it.
And then again I think it might be good to get updates, like a phone call that says, "Hey, we got the bed finished today. Total is up to $1800 bux with parts and ____ hours of block sanding. It's going to look great! Should we keep going?"

It easily looks like 6 months of labor to me, but that's because I know a little bit about the process. Two years ago I would have figured about 3hours/day X 30 days = 60ish hours total.

If the cab was media blasted already and all of the current and proper tools were used and panels and spare cab already in place I would have to guess no more than 600-750 hours. (8+- hour days & 5 days a week & 3 months/ 15 weeks?) if working nothing but this project.

With the amount of rust in that cab, and all the body work and priming done, I would say 1000-1200 man hours. And since you have been on this truck about 3 months, I would say you guys have kicked a$$ on it and done a good job at the same time.

It has been my experience that most of the guys that can afford to have a car or truck built, have no clue what it takes to build one.

I have a project that I started for a customer about 6 years ago, and he was always questioning, how much more $$ and time it this going to take. And of course he was throwing other work to me in the midsts of it all. Then he decided to do a quick build on another truck also....about 4 years ago. Long story short, the truck came back to me about a year ago, for the engine, trans upgrade, and to get it on the road. This time since the guy had just retired, he wanted to help me. Yes I know that can be a PITA, but I agreed, since it would be for only half a day at a time. Well needless to say, he got a good education what it takes to do something like that. Plus I gave him all the crappy clean up jobs to do, and made him run for parts when I needed them. Now he understands what is really involved.

That's where ignorance is a bane in dealing with customers. If they don't turn wrenches on these rigs then they usually don't know how time consuming repairs, especially body repairs, can be. I would estimate around 1,000 hours for what has been done to that truck so far.

It really looks like you have a 1000 hours into it, seriously. You cut up the donor cab, you spent a bunch of time preping the orig cab for work, (removing from the frame and stripping it, blasting it) and after finding the bad parts cut them out and replacing them. Just the cab removal / disassembly and seeing what needed to be done would be 100 hours. The window / roof would have taken another hundered hours I would think.

By the way, tell the person you trying to make a point to that the time is not days a week but how many hours it takes one person to do the job. People don't understand man hours. they only see days or weeks. If you had three guys working on the truck for a week soilid that's 120 hours labor. That's how shows like overhauliing are done in a week. They have 30 guys working 24 hours a day to get the stuff done in a week. they still have 5000 hours into the car they are working on but it's just very compressed.

Well we have around 217 man hours in this project, that is not counting the engine and chassis work...........

The 217 man hours is what is in question, his friends and him seem to think that is way to high......

A lot of friends and a long weekend. I've seen Chip Foose do more than that in 2 days on Overhaulin.

<edit> Seriously, that is a TON of work right there looking at the pics. Looks awesome and if there is only 217 hours into that, then I would consider it a HUGE bargain.

65.00x217 hours = $14,105 BEFORE TAX assuming he charges what the local guys here do for auto work.

I'd cry too but that's why I do my own work, although it's quite a bit shall we say...less than professional?

Holy Sheepdip!!!! only 217 hours?. Does that include going to get the donor cab, stripping the project cab sandblasting, getting all the materials? I'm sure you are being very conservitive in your billing, not charging for the real time you have put in it, since you know it's a lot of money no matter how much you charge.

They may think of the money and not the work and cost of doing business. Afterall you have to pay the guys who are working, the shop rent, materials, all the overhead. And still everyone has to make a living.

His friends may be thinking this as a of a weekend project and not a pro shop. What you did in a month they would take over a year or longer and would probably not even get that close to do even as close as good work as you.
Sure it's a lot of money reguardless, and it will be een more by the time he's finished but he wants a shop to do it and he will have to pay for someone elses labor and expertiece

I spent 10 months restoring a VW squareback for my daughter. It took 1100 hours and cost me 6k. That was me doing all the work my self. I worked every day after work and 12 hours a day each day off. I went to two VW restoshops to get quotes before I started. They wanted 20 to 30K to do the work. Mind you this is a VW that has nearly no rust, 100% complete and just needed to be stripped to the chassis and rebuilt.

Restoring cars is not cheap.
