85 K30-6.2 diesel.

Hey guys, just thought I would start a thread on my diesel truck. This won't be so much a build thread but more just the little things I do or come across with this truck. Trying to make this an everyday driver for the most part. I imagine some of you have already seen the truck.

It wasn't running and had not been for the last year it sat. Got it home and charged the batteries for a couple of days. Cranked on it twice for about 10 each time. Got out and bled the fuel filter one time until I got a steady stream of fuel. After that it took a couple times but then finally fired up. It's been running since.

After I got it running I then waxed the whole truck and started cleaning up the interior. I have got all that done except I need to pull the seat so I can take the carpet out and give it a good cleaning (still smells like mice) and then put back together if the carpet comes out decent. It is pretty dirty.

I then was wondering why the heat vent on the drivers side was blocked off. I took the dash off and pulled the glove box to find that someone had taken most of the duct work out of the dash. Basically all I had was defrost and a little floor heat. They had taken out all the dash vent duct work all out. When having it on vent all the heat was blowing up and heating the bottom side of the dash pad. So I am in the process of taking the needed pieces out of the 85 K10 cab I have and repairing. I also noticed the clip that holds the rod in for the blend door was missing so I put that back in too. I had to stop since my DD 03 2500HD crewcab's fuel pump went out. I just got the 2500 in the garage today.

I went to start the K30 today and nothing. I only had outside lights would come on. Nothing in the cab would work. So after I jumped on the forum and looked at a couple of threads I went out to check a few things. The first thing I checked was the link/transfer block on the firewall. I must have a bad connection there. As soon as I tried to jump the block with my screwdriver it came alive. I had left the blower motor switch on high with the key on so if I bumped a bad connection it would kick on and I would know what it was. So as of now I need to finish putting the duct work back together, splice in a new part of rear brake line (rot) and power wash the carpet. Then I will evaluate what else I need to work on. I want to get all the wiring under the dash straightened out and then maybe tackle the under hood wiring. Got some cut off wire there and need to find out where they are suppose to go and why they were cut.

Not making any big plans for it right now. Just trying to get it to a good solid driver status. It does need some tires and does have rust that needs attention. Drivers side floor pan needs replaced first, then may get some outer rockers and a couple touch up spots around the truck. I need to get this one drivable so I can turn some attention back over to my short bed build and also work some on my 84 K30.

I like your truck!!! I kinda have the same thing going on. Mostly cleanup and maintenance/preventative maintenance to keep it on the road and nice.

This truck is in need of some attention. It has got alot of small things wrong that really start to add up. Been one too many hands on this one. Today I got the heat duct put back in and decide I would pull the carpet so I can get ready to powerwash it. So I pull the carpet back and see just how bad the floor pan needed replaced. They had put a metal plate over the whole under the carpet. I knew it was going to need some floor work anyway but it was worse than I thought it would be.

Drivers side is pretty bad and the passenger side is rough and I can see daylight through one small thin section on it. I really wasn't wanting to get this involved with the truck at this time since I am still working on the short bed. Oh and I found this when I took the seat out too. Evidently someone broke the bolt I am assuming so they did this. There was just a bolt and nut there.

I'm going to follow along with this, just because its a sweet truck.

Looks like the PO's did some pretty shotty work to it but at least it's in good hands now and you'll be able to get it going good my man!

Had a little time today and decided to powerwash the engine compartment and under the truck. Been wanting to degrease what little oil was on the engine for awhile now. Just now getting time to fit it in. Nothing major here just some cleaned up pics. Still need to polish the rims but they will be fine for awhile. It didn't clean up to bad even with the rust showing.

A couple more. One of the good side of the interior. The drivers side seat cloth material is deteriorated pretty bad. I have a couple of indentations in the seat from something laying on it that I can't seem to get out. One on the back rest and the others on passenger side bottom.

Hey Roy...truck looks good(except for the floor)...Are those wheels Alcoas or Eagles?

I am gonna say Eagle since it has Eagle caps on them. I still need to clean them up a little but they look pretty good the way it sets now.

If they're Alcoas, you'll see markings stamped on the lips of the wheels.



Also, all the Eagles I've ever seen use shouldered lugnuts that fit down into the bore of the lugnut hole while Alcoas use flat lugnuts with built in washers.

I am pretty sure they are the Eagle 034 rims which are discontinued. There are no markings on the rims like Kevin posted.

Kevin, thanks for the tip about the markings in the rims. Now if I come across a set I will know how to tell if they are the real deal.

Thanks. I was curious because I have a set of Alcoa LTS wheels VERY similar to those, that are cracked. I just called Alcoa and there is a complete recall on the LTS wheels because of racks...They are sending me a BRAND NEW set free of charge! They will be the "Classic" style just like what Kevin has on his truck...only mine are for a SRW not a dually.

I was familiar with the recall before I ever bought my Alcoas. I was just hoping my serial numbers fell into the recall so I could score a set of new wheels too. My bad luck, my wheels are too old.

So do they only make the classic style for the SRW trucks and not the duallies? I thought the rims for the duallies were discontinued. Is that correct?

That is correct. They only sell Classic wheels in 16" diameters for single wheel applications. I bought a set awhile ago for my Truck Norris Dodge.






But, some of the dually wheels like my 16" Classics were subject to recall. If someone turns in a set of recalled wheels, Alcoa replaces them free of charge with new Classics, so apparently they still make a few for replacements but don't sell new ones over the counter anymore.

Alcoa currently offers 16" & 17" SRW & DRW wheels in the Classic 8 pattern. They used to have a model called the Hotshot that was for DRW apps and they had a 5-spoke design (love them myself) and the LTS a SRW & DRW model that also had a 5-spoke design that was part of the recall.

I think that information on the website could be outdated. Maybe not, I can't verify.

What I do know is, their main distributor is local to me...

And they told me that Alcoa no longer offers 16" Classic DRW wheels. They could be wrong. I just don't know.

Just ranting here. Been thinking about sell this truck. REALLY don't want to but it does need some work. The thought of selling and buying the flat bed for my other K30 is appealing especially if I could get the body work done and painted too.

Of coarse then I jump into it today and everything changed in a split second. Not quite sure what I am going to do yet. I will ride it out for awhile and see how it goes. Just needed to get it off my chest I guess.

You hit the nail on the head there Bruiser. Trying to juggle three different squares is a bit much.

Yeah this truck was originally a 4-speed truck and was converted over. The guy who built the truck took the pedal assembly and everything else out of the truck when they put the auto in.

Good question. I really had not put a number on it. Just had the thought running through my head. It is a good running truck. I have tried to get it all in order to put it back on the road. All I have to do is replace the rear brake line and bleed the brakes other than put in a new floor patch panel.

Like I said I had the thought until I jumped in it yesterday to move it out of the shed. Unless I have a really bad day or just need the funds I will probably just keep it. If it does go up for sale it will be listed here on the forum and will mention it in this thread as well.

This truck actually came from about two hours from you. I bought it from a guy in Germantown, OH.

That's absolutely crazy. I wouldn't think someone in Germantown would have a truck like that. That's a pretty high-end part of town. Although, square bodies are loved by many different types of folks. I'd definitely be an interested buyer should that day ever come. I'll follow along. BTW, I love those wheels on your truck currently. Sad news about the recall, but I definitely think it will look great with Alcoas as well. I've been following Txfirefighter's hillbilly deluxe thread as well, and those rims look great.

On a related note, does that truck have hydroboost? If so, is there any particular way you go about stiffening up the peddle when bleeding. Mine has been testing my patience lately, doesn't seem to bleed all the air out.

A guy by the name of Stan Rudd built the truck. He is from somewhere around that area but not sure which town. He does alot of truck pulling from what I gather. He runs alot of these squares I guess. I found it on craigslist a few months back and made the 200 mile trip and hauled it back home.
