Hobart Welder about to get the AXE

I got my Hobart MIG welder wired into the new shop finally after two years of sitting in storage. Went to weld with it and the welds laid out like a row of dimes, but they looked funny... After some investigation the bottle is turned on but there is no gas coming out of the welder to the welds...

Does anyone have any clue what I need to look at to get this thing working properly so I can start tack welding these filler plates in????

Re: Hobart Welder about to get the AXE

can you hear gas flow inside the machine while the trigger is pulled? if so the gas line in the machine has come lose.

or the gas flow solenoid is bad.
good luck

Re: Hobart Welder about to get the AXE

plug it in.. and use a test light on the feed line from the trigger.

if it has power.. see if the solenoid clicks..

Sorry it took me so long to get back, things have been extremely hectic lately! I havent had a chance to test as of yet, however, planning on getting out there tonight to verify! A buddy of mine said that if I was running "flux core" wire it would cause my welds to look funny as well! I am not sure what kind of wire is in it except that it is .024 wire (someone wrote that in marker on the spool)... How would I know if this is flux core wire?

I do know that I am not getting gas out of the handle when I hit the trigger but could it possibly be a combination of problems?

Re: Hobart Welder about to get the AXE

never saw .024 fluxcore, all gas flow possibles are listed above. I'd bet it is the gas line inside the machine lose on one end or the other

Re: Hobart Welder about to get the AXE

If you have flux core wire then you will have a slag on your weld similar to a stick weld.

Plain old bare mig wire won't leave a slag behind.

Ok so I went out and pulled the welder out and now for some reason it seems to be working! I got some pics of everything I will post up when I get back to my computer!

This is the welder that I am working with! It is an older Hobart that I bought years ago.

This is the regulator setup that I have on my bottle!

Today I went out and hit the trigger and heard gas come out of the handle. So I laid down this weld. I know the weld looks crappy but I didnt change the settings on my welder for the thickness of this metal or wire speed or anything it was just a test weld to see if it was going to lay a decent bead.

Does it not look a little funny to you guys, it has a yellow flake on it after the weld cools down???

Re: Hobart Welder about to get the AXE

Definitely not flux core. All welds look like that with a wire machine, I believe it is just "normal" trash on the metal (see how dirty your metal is?). My Miller 252 does it too when I do not clean the steel very well..

I appreciate it! I'm still wondering why the gas wasn't blowing before today!?!?

Re: Hobart Welder about to get the AXE

I bought a 210MVP new, and I had to click the trigger probably 20 times after unboxing and setting it up to get the solenoid to work. I swear when they aren't used for a couple weeks, they stick closed.

I've heard that leaving pressure in the line between the tank reg and the solenoid ends for a period of time can get the solenoid to stick, I always turn my gas off and purge the line if I'm not gonna be using it for a little bit.
