Back to Chevy and Back to the Forum!

Well i took a little hiatus. Sold my 72 C10 a few months back and had replaced it with a 2001 Wrangler. Well sold the Wrangler a couple weeks back for a nice little profit and last night i picked up my new toy/DD/project.

Been shopping for 2 weeks straight and found nothing but junk. Well last night an add pops up on craigslist for a 95 Silverado, 350, 5 speed, all power with 150,000 miles. I called the old boy and 2 hours later I drove home in this 95 for $2,750. Runs smooth as silk. Interior is in good shape. Just a few small problems but no major issues. Its good to be back under the bowtie and good to be back on the forums...

Dang Joel. That is just the kind of truck I've been hoping to run across. I've got to start paying more attention to CL I guess.

Re: Back to Chevy and Back to the Forum!

Well after a weekend of driving it i can say i dont regret it one bit.

Everything works. A/C is ice cold. Motor still running strong and smooth. All the bells and whistles work. No complaints yet!

Only think i plan on changing this year is the windshield, and some new rubber. They are still in somewhat decent shape, just not a fan of good year wrangler A/T on these trucks..

I figure within the year i will need a new clutch and some adjustments. But for now will keep on trucking. Body is smooth except one small dent in the drivers side cab which i plan on getting the paintless dent repair guy to fix in the next month or so.

All in all, to me it was worth the money. I love stepsides, my wife likes it. It runs good... And its been over a decade since i had a 350, 5 Speed. So enjoy it i will and steal as many ideas as i can from you guys!

Yeah so far i am really happy with it. Having to clean it up and get the 18 year old kid theme off of it. Man that boy had a bunch of stickers! Got the inside nice and clean. Still needs a good bath outside and under the hood.

All in all its a great truck so far. Needs a windshield and probably a clutch in the next year. But she has good power and everything works like new so no complaints!

Bert i still have your old 307 setting on an engine stand! Heck i still have everything on it really.

I had your old crank worked up and have my old 307 in the shed. All brand new rebuild kit, built heads by Geoff, pistons and rods. heck just needs a couple more things to build it completely.....

Man i wish the wife would let me buy something to build it for! lol. Guess i should sell it...

Nice score! I'd love to have something like that to tool around in. Nice drivetrain combo, too. My '91 is a 350/5-speed.

like to have something like that to tool around in.? Buddy take a look out in your garage, you DO. it's that slick blue one you don't drive much. The one that sparked my interest in a 5 speed shorty. I've got nice trucks right now but I'd still like to have another shorty, with a stick.

Redleg, that's a good looking truck. But then, I'm hardly impartial, as you can tell from my avatar. Planning to lower it any?

Thanks. I'm flattered. And you are right, I do, but unfortunately I took mine too far beyond daily practicality. I'd like to have something simpler that wouldn't grab so much attention that I wouldn't worry about if I made a stop at Wal-Mart or the mall.

If I got myself a truck like Redleg's, I'd put a 4/6 drop on it (keeping the Sport wheels), get some clear headlights and parking lights, OEM-style LED taillights and maybe a smoothie front bumper and a GMC grille and billet insert, but that's it. A simple driver.

With my '91 and it's current shorter-than-stock wheels and tires, I've seen 21+ on the highway.

Re: Back to Chevy and Back to the Forum!

WELL, the wife has recently started us on the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace plan. So that obviously cuts into my budget!

As soon as my house in Texas sells i PLAN on doing a few things to the truck.

My IDEAS (safer to call it that instead of plans at this point) are to drop the truck. Looking over the kits I will probably go 4-6. I am usually not a scrapping kind of guy, but it looks good on these trucks. When it all comes down to it, if this becomes a WORKING DD. I will probably just level it out with 2.5" in back and 1" in front.

The hood has some regular slamming dings where someone shut it to hard, so i would like to go with a 2" or 3" cowl hood.

The 225/75/15 tires Goodyear Wranglers will be replaced with 255/60/15 TA Radials.

In time i would like to get a smoothie front and rear bumper. But thats not at the top of the list at this point.

If i go that far i will pull the bed rails off and put a color matched bed cover on.

I am not a big sound system kind of guy, but I have to admit i have been thinking of installing one considering everything is already professionally ran. All we did was pull the kids amp and speakers out.....

Of course for powertrain....Being as its an original 17 year old truck...I dont plan on changing to much until i can change it all. Dont want to build a motor then kill the tranny. So will clean it up, all around tune up, add some headers to the current dual exhaust with flowmasters.. Need to run the exhaust at least another few feet back. He just had the exhaust installed and they turn down right past the mufflers... Little loud in the cab at city driving speeds....

So yeah thats about it for now. Some little cosmetic touches here and there..

Re: Back to Chevy and Back to the Forum!

Joel -- Thought I'd post up some pics; it might help you out some. Mine's got 2" shackles in back and 1" springs up front. And I'm running 60 series BFGs, but mine are 275 wide. I love the way they look, and I believe I've been told they'll fit under a 4/6 drop without any problems. I'll post up an old cowl hood pic, too. Mine met an unfortunate end, but I was getting tired of it anyway.

Are you gonna try to find a replacement airdam for the front? That would make a big change right there.

That right there is what i want this truck to look like. Well minus the fleetside bed. And yep, ive already been searching for one.... Both versions of your truck are gorgeous. Looking at it now i just might go with that drop for now.

That is a sweet looking truck. I'd love to find something like that for the wife to drive back and forth to work with. She'd love to get back into a pickup with a 5 speed. Hope it's a good one for you.

Yeah i missed the old 5 speed quite a bit. Its a BIG improvement over the 3 OTT on the old 72.

Hey read a thread where you had painted your trim? How hard was it and what kind of paint did you use?

Thanks... My wife likes the truck. And i have tried to show her the "POTENTIAL" by showing her some of the trucks on here, however she is not very cooperative sometimes. Especially when it comes to money!

But, to be honest, it shouldnt take a lot. My plans are to make a stepside twin of jb1016's.. Clean, smooth, slightly lowered....

So right now i think i can settle with doing the following in the short term maybe

Front Air Dam
1"-2" lowered
Clean up trim
Clear lenses

There is more i would like to do, but i have 2 other toys (Harleys) that take A LOT more money. So until they are payed for, thats probably all that will happen for now...

Re: Back to Chevy and Back to the Forum!

We just did a 2 inch shackle on My Dads Stepside. Sits perfectly level. His truck is too rare to anything else to it. But I love a clean stepside.

The clear plastic part on the top was pulling off in places, and there's a shiny thin film under that. So I pulled all the plastic off (some of it had to be cut off at the very top of the trim, but most of it pulled off easy), and then pulled/scraped/red scotchbrite-ed the shiny film off (it's pale white underneath, or else I would have been done at that point). Then scuffed it just a little, and then taped and taped and taped. Getting the film off and the taping were the time-consuming parts. As for the paint, I had something made especially for plastic trim. All in all it wasn't that long (probably most of an afternoon, if I'd done it all at once) and it was maybe ten bucks in materials. And I thought it looked a whole lot better after I did it.

Re: Back to Chevy and Back to the Forum!

just an update. its amazing what new rubber can do to a truck. looks and rides so much better

went with 255/70/15s. I was going to go 255/60, however i have been using this truck as a truck and have decided to only lower it 1"-2" so i wanted a little taller tire to fill the wheel wells.
