I found my timing chain off and teeth on crank gear worn. I'm gonna replace whole set. How do I do that? I know I have turned the camshaft while getting harmonic balanced off. I haven't removed distributor. So when I put new gears and chain on what do I do about timing?

It's easy. There is a dot on the crank gear and a dot on the cam gear. Put the crank gear dot straight up and the cam gear dot straight down. Use a straightedge if you need. They should point exactly at each other. Install the chain in that position. Use loctite on the three cam bolts and torque properly. Done deal.

You will need a puller to get the crank gear off. A three jaw type works fine. The new gear will go onto the crank pretty easy. Use either a blunt punch or a piece of pipe to tap it into place until it bottoms out.

thanks man. i was thinking since the cam and crank aren't where they were it would not be in time. does that make sense?

when you point the two dots on the gears together, it will be back in time.

Not trying to make this difficult but, it doesn't matter where the crank and cam are right now as long as line up the dots it'll be in time? I thought you had to worry about TDC?

Don't sweat it. Just turn the cam and crank as needed to get the marks lined up. Don't touch the distributor. It's relationship with the camshaft is already set up and it doesn't need to be worried about.

Make the dots line up before you take the original gears off. Then line the new ones up when you put them on. Don't turn anything when you have the gears off.

To turn the engine once the balancer and timing cover are off, take a large Crescent wrench and adjust it down to where it fits snugly on the crank snout. Then when you turn it, the wrench will hit the woodruff key and turn the engine. It's an easy way of barring the engine over and it doesn't hurt the crank whatsoever.

It is a good idea to check the timing once you get the engine running again to make sure you get the most of your new timing set.
