What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

http://elmira.craigslist.org/cto/3655838365.html

I am in college and have been searching for a project chevy for a while. This truck is in my price range and wouldn't be a daily driver or anything. I would be fixing it up on a tight budget but it appears most of the mechanicals are taken care of. I got the guy down to $3500. You guys are far more experienced than me so I wanted your input.

Well, IMO, it sounds like he has done a fair amount of work, but doing work and doing work correctly are 2 different things. You are assuming that everything has been done right, but if you have to re- do some of the work, then you might as well get something cheaper and you do the work yourself. The pipes are a bit of a red flag for me.

Re: What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

Welcome to the forum.
Being from Cali (but grew up back east) first thing I look at is rust. If she has any signs of it things could get expensive fast. That truck looks like it needs additional time and money just to drive it.
You want a clean driver and with the money you have it's possible to find. Let me throw out a crazy idea. Why not shop around the west coast for a truck and utilize the network of people on this forum to help in the effort to find something appropriate.
For example look at this...BTW, I have no connection to this seller. I just found it searching CL in a little under a minute.

Have you actually gone and looked at it? The CL ad makes it sound like it's still in pieces, with the engine still installed.

Sounds like parts to me as well plus a 5 speed non-stock trans.. It might not be the best first and budget truck. Do you have pictures of it beyond the ad pics.?

Re: What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

I haven't gone to look at it yet. The seller said everything's done besides te interior. Is the biggest concern that it could be in pieces? If not what are the thoughts? I'm set I go look at it next Sunday. What should I check for specifically as red flags?

Re: What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

in his add it says it still needs drivers side floor and rocker work. best bet is to go look at it and see for yourself what it needs. looking at the first pic it doesnt have a rocker panel on the drivers side.

the one i linked looks good in the pic, but you never know until you go look at it. i have been having a hard time not going to look at that one. but then relised i need to finish the one i have first. it would never get done if i had 2.

Re: What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

I can weld so the rocker work shouldn't be a major deal. The only problem I see with the one you posted compared to the one I'm looking at is the straight 6 opposed to the rebuilt 350. I am in school for engineering so I'm mechanically inclined to handle most issues.

Re: What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

yes, if you can weld - that helps, but the price he's asking, in my mind, is a "no welding needed" sorta price. personally, I'd walk, I think you can find better/more original for less, especially if it still needs a bit of bodywork. One more thought - ask what the 5-speed is. If it's a T5, it won't last long behind a 350 if you plan on more than zero burnouts. If it's something more stout, then great.

Re: What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

personally i love the i6. its different, and will run forever. if the body is as solid as it looks you could always swap it out later. dont rush into it. look at more than 1 truck. you will be better off in the long run if you get a rust free(or minimal rust) body. read the boards to know what you should look for when you go to look. i wish i found this place before i got mine. the motor/tranny and a few interior parts are the only thing left from the truck i bought. body looked good, but it was a bondo nightmare.

When the seller states the '70 C-10 has "factory 4 link setup" for rear suspension, you have to wonder what other things he is fantasizing about.

Re: What do you guys think of this as a starter project?

Found an ad for the first truck with more pictures. I'm going to look at it tomorrow. The truck is together as pictured in the first 2 pics. Any further ideas? http://williamsport.craigslist.org/cto/3655840972.html
