advice with metallic painting

My dad is painting my 67 chevy truck sometime this week, he has painted several trucks using regular paint but not metallic paint. the truck has all the body panels on it i was wondering with metallic paint do you make one continuous spray from the front to the back of the truck or paint a panel at a time, thanks for the help any advice involving painting with metallic paint is appreciated

Re: advice with metallic painting

Open the pattern and volume knobs on your gun, hold the gun several feet above the surface your painting and let the dusting hit the panel and it with flip the metalic up and uniform it. Sounds nuts but it works. metalic can come out blotchy and thats how you fix it, it works like magic. Base/clear may be different but Im betting it works the same.

I agree. I've always shots 2 medium wet coats and then held the gun 2-3 feet off the surface and sprayed another 2 coats. It's the only way I've found to avoid the metallic blotches.

Re: advice with metallic painting

This is my first metallic paint job, done last month. I painted the front clip, then cab, then bed. Shot side to side, then up and down. There is a little blotchyness, but it's barely noticeable because the color is so dark. It looked like a zebra before the second direction, and came out good for a F@%D. Light colors are a LOT harder to make look good. Keep the cup stirring at all times.

Re: advice with metallic painting

basic spray gun technique or, lack thereof, is visible esp. in metallic paint finishes-
consistency is paramount-
keep gun perpendicular to surface
keep spray pattern plumb to surface
keep gun distance equal
set spray so you can move at a consistent and metered pace
keep overlap of spray pattern 60% and equal at all times
trigger gun previous to, and release after you pass surface
move the gun with your arm, not your wrist
follow the same direction i.e. on all passes
go in the direction of longest panel length
do not try to shoot the whole side of your truck in single passes
i would generally shoot a tack coat, followed by 2 or more med. to full wet coats at recommended flash times
while the last wet film is fresh (do not wait or allow time for solvent flash) pull gun back 50% distance to previous and mist the panel lightly to encourage an even setting of metallics at the surface level...
make certain you allow adequate time for the basecoat to set- if you throw clear at it too early it can mess up the base film and show everything you just worked so hard trying to avoid seeing

Re: advice with metallic painting

... by that i was addressing the original question about shooting the whole thing or using panel separations as stopping points...IMO the panel separations can be used to your advantage in the effort of not telegraphing the application through the metallics...if you were to spray bumper to bumper the product will be flashing at the ends likely before you get back to the start point, thus you'd have inconsistent wet film overlap bc the film isn't going to be uniformly wet front to back...with that in mind one can conceive that the metallics will not float to surface consistently and this is exactly the reason you would see every pass on the side of the truck hope that makes sense-regards

Agree.
Just wanted to clarify not to stop pass mid-panel.
On the same page.
