79 K10 292 problem

Trying to put a straight 6 292 into a 79 K10 4x4. Truck was an original 350 4 barrel. This is my sons and he bought it with no motor. We have a few 292's so that's the reason. Mating up the motor to the 4 Spd manual we find the oil pan doesn't have proper clearance to the cross member/ engine bracket. Know all about the difference on the frame towers, but is there a different cross members used on the 292. I also know they were not offered in the 1/2 tons but I didn't think it would be a problem. If anybody knows the solution please let me know. Otherwise I will be cutting and modding the cross member. Thanks.

Re: 79 K10 292 problem

not to sure but aren't 1/2 and 3/4 different in size. so wouldnt the 1/2 ton have a different bolt pattern, dimensions...which would make them have a different oil pan size for the half ton not allowing it fit. why not just make a oil pan that will fit... cant be that hard. i assuming its hitting because the 292 oil pan is to deep. so why not shorten and flatten it. i believe with the 292 being so tall it has a one more quart more than a 305 or 350...dont know though... just modify the oil pan... cardboard and harborfrieght welder should work. cutting cross member would seem bad since its the structure of the truck. by cardboard i mean to make the size to trace onto metal... but also maybe trade a 292 for a 250... itll fit and 250 stuff is easier to find. I have a 292 and its just $$$$$.

Re: 79 K10 292 problem

Deep part of pan is at the rear and has no clearance issues, it is the shallow part of the pan that is not clearing, so reducing is really not and option. I think because the v8 is not as tall they sit higher on the frame allowing the pan to clear, where as the 6 is taller and propably has to sit lower in the frame for hood clearance. I know they use the 292 in the 3/4 4x4 as an option, frames should not be any different except for suspension stuff. Will keep researching. The cross member is riveted in not bolted.
