Question Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

Hello again everyone, been awhile since I've been on here. My truck is overdue for some new exhaust front to rear, and I was considering some headers while I was at it.

I'm looking for exhaust headers that will just replace the stock manifolds and bolt up to the factory downpipe (Y pipe). So far I've found three different companies offering this.

JBA Performance Exhaust

Gibson Performance Exhaust

Pace Setter Performance Products

Has anyone used one of these products or know of any other companies offering a similar product? My #1 concern is that I Really don't want to burn my spark plug wires. I'd love to hear some feedback from anyone running this type of header on their truck. Any opinions on whether I should go for stainless steel or ceramic coated? I'm not fond of the lifespan of mild steel.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

I've been running Edelbrock ceramic stainless shorty headers for about 7 years now with no issues, and I love them. I run Taylor 8mm wires with extra clips to keep them out of the way of the exhaust.

Of course Edelbrock doesn't make them anymore so that probably won't help you much.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

I use the ebay stainless on my 88, work great, shorty, no donut gaskets, and were cheaper then most black painted ones.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

I got some of the black painted pacesetters and the paint lasted about 20 minutes. They fit great and all that but looked like **** after 90% of the paint was burned or missing. Now I have a set of the stainless ebay ones in my basement ready to go on that benoit454 is talking about. They look awesome, I cant wait to get them on.

Do you guys have any issues getting to the spark plugs with the eBay headers? My Edelbrocks are a PITA for a few plugs.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

Not sure yet on the ebay ones. For my pacesetters, I did have to shorten a spark plug socket to be able to fit between the block and the header pipe.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

My Borlas are super easy to change plugs. But they're not made any more.

I checked your application in Summit and there is 60 choices 26 of which are shorties.

Mine are similar to these

If anyone ever needs a short plug socket, this comes in handy.

And how exactly do they bolt up to the stock y pipe?

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

I recently installed a set of the stainless steel ones frome Ebay and am very happy with them. Eveything bolted right up including the y pipe. The spark plugs are no issues with them. You can't go wrong with them unless you don't want shorties.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

Tom, he said hes running straight headers so he isnt using the y pipe or cats anymore. If you want to bolt to the stock y pipe and rear configuration, you'll have to use shorties.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

GM offered some factory headers... No problems with fit! These are off an 85, I don't see why they would fit 88-95...

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

I decided to give the ebay ones a try. I just got them today. They look great! I think the plug wires will clear OK. I guess I'll find out when I put them on the truck.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

One thing I'd suggest while you're at it. Flange the Y-pipe at the cat for easy removal if/ when you have to do some R&R to the drivetrain like an engine swap or trans rebuild. It's been a pain for me because I can't remove the lower bellhousing cover because of the Y-pipe.

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

Has anyone ran the 88-95 ebay header on say a.... 69 Stepside? Motor mount issues keeping me from finding a good header, and it looks as if the tubes from the front most exhaust ports come up and back which would eliminate the problem. Sorry to hijack, let me know if this would work. (using the 350 mounting holes not the I6)

Re: Exhaust Headers for a 5.7

Forget the stock Y pipe jus put your big boy pants on buy some nice long tube headers and do a nice dual exhaust set up and call it a day. Cut out the cat you have a 89 all they do is a safety inspection unless your in Cali. If your gonna spend money spend it the right way make the best improvements you can cause if your doing headers now you might wanna do the rest of the exhaust also why have nice aftermarket headers and a crappy stock exhaust
