GM 14 bolt backlash ?

My 14 bolt has a whine over 30 mph while on the gas and cruising but it will stop when I let off the gas. I don't know the miles on the axle, it's from a CUCV. Can I adjust the backlash using a dial indicator and some marking compound to eliminate the whine, maybe move the carrier closer to the pinion, or are the gears done.
A local shop said the R&P need to be replaced because there is too much play in the pinion, I told him it had a Detroit locker in it, it should have play.

Re: GM 14 bolt backlash ?

Once gears start to make noise they were either set up wrong in the first place or just worn out. Either way you need a new gear seat. Play between the ring and pinion has nothing to do with whether you have an open rear, locker or a posi unit. If the pinion has excessive movement the gears are worn out.

Thanks Guys, Looks like new gears and install kit it is but which one's? I don't trust the super low price one's. It's been a long time since I've had to re gear an axle.

Re: GM 14 bolt backlash ?

The Detroit will rotate the pinion nearly a 1/4 turn. But the backlash is not affected by it. G2 is a good brand that I install nearly 10 axles a month in. I put 3 year 36k warranties on em. Excellent products. Have you taken the diff cover off yet?

Yes. I took the cover off to take a look and change the oil. That was before I drove it. I just got it back on the road when I noticed the whine.
