Manual steering gearboxes.

So lately I've been wanting to do the manual steering conversion in my lowered 84 c10(5-6 front 5 rear). The only thing is I would like to know if there is a quicker ratio version out there that is a bolt in swap or close too for our trucks?

I also plan on doing the XJ Cherokee steering shaft conversion at the same time. I've looked into stock boxes and not wanting to chance a junkyard one that may need a rebuild and not be the ratio I want anyways there has to be an aftermarket solution. I'm pretty tired of the power assisted numbness that even my tight factory steering gear box has.

Everyone seems to have power ones but not manual. Thanks for any help. I might see if I can get ahold of a junkyard one for cheap for now but I still want a faster ratio.

If you grab a junkyard box it will probably be in just as bad shape yours is in.Your best bet is talk to http://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/ or http://lee-powersteering.com/index.htm both will custom rebuild any box any ratio you can want.

Manual box will be a alot slower. 5 turns lock to lock or more.

I have a manual box. With a 245/60 tire I can be challenging to turn.

The manual box may do what you want, but what would help the "numbness" you talk about is more caster. Search "caster mod". There are a few good write ups on it.

By numbness I'm talking about road feel more or less. With the factory power you can use one finger to turn it bugs me for it to be that easy.

I've thought about a manual rack and pinion too. I plan on doing a fiberglass flipnose front end and having lots of aluminum bits up front to cut down on the weight. This should make turning a bit easier with the manual box or rack.

I've had some smaller cars midsize trucks and loved the rack and pinion steering. Even more so when it wasn't power assisted. Just wonder if I can get the same performance out of a standard box. I'll have to check out the links above and check into the caster bit. Thanks guys!

Mine gives plenty of feel.
But in a oh shiznit moment it's not fast enough to catch up with it.

You can get a rack and pinion kit for your truck but you won't like the price tag on them.
