r134 condenser

I have read a lot on this forum about changing the condenser over to a more efficient one for r134, but can't find any specific part numbers or where to buy one that would be better. Anyone know where to buy a better condenser for r134? Thanks.

I had this on the wrong message board

Re: r134 condenser

I just installed this one today. Can't tell you anymore, other than I had to make brackets, relativity easy to do. It takes up most of the space. looks to be about as big as could fit. Having hoses made tommorrow. Don't know how well it works yet.

Re: r134 condenser

Thanks. Do you have any pictures of it with the brackets and mounted? You will have to keep us updated on how it cools. I plan on running a sanden style compressor and wanted to get the best cooling possible.

Re: r134 condenser

I am using the a6 compressor and poa valve calibrated for 134a. completely flushed the system. The original condenser worked great, but in phoenix at stop lights, I am sure in the hot summer it would not work well. I got 42 degree air going down the hiway and idling for a short time, at 100 degrees outside. It looks like that it will be easy to seal up the edges for more air flow at idle, if this does not work out well. It will be next summer for the real test. any taller and it would hit the bottom of hood latch.

Thumbs up Re: r134 condenser

I bought the whole kit from Classic Air group.
Here is the kit and it's all upgraded for 134A. Everything you need for a performance AC!

Original Air Group's affordable & easy to install high performance factory air-conditioning upgrade kit will help you save on horsepower, give you better fuel economy and performance, allow for a continuous duty rating of 6,000 RPM and save half the weight of the stock compressor, and function every bit as efficiently with the newer 134a refrigerant as it did with the old R12 refrigerant. It's also the easiest and most affordable way to convert your air conditioning system to the newer 134a! Kit includes rotary compressor, compressor mounting brackets, high-performance parallel-flow "Perfect Fit Series" condenser, suction, discharge & liquid hoses & lines, filter-drier, o-rings & hardware and all the tech support you need. For factory air-conditioning equipped vehicles only. Pulleys are additional, if needed.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: r134 condenser

2 pieces of 1 1/4 x 1/8 strap cut to 17-18 inches long each. Used aluminum from home depot to space out 1/2 to 3/4 inches from condenser. Radiator had a small leak, so decided to replace the condenser and water pump and all belts at the same time. Probably easier with the radiator out. about $15 in parts.

If you want the best air flow plug up the openings around the radiator and condenser to force the air trough the coils. I did this and it got me down to 38* and that is sitting at stop lights.

In other posts about this info people have asked about the 134a parallel-flow stuff. Some even said it wasn't. I just wanted it noticed in the post that it was and it was by your post!

I agree with Fitz.

You wouldn't offend anyone if you lost the RED TEXT and all that unnecessary crap in your Signature. Just my opinion, but I bet others would agree.

Re: r134 condenser

Still working on it, as I am doing other maintenance on it. Should possibly charge the a/c fri or sat. Remember, my a/c worked great before the condenser, and it is not even hot now. I only replaced it it in hopes that it works better when the outdoor temp gets high. The condenser came charged with air, so It probably does not have any leaks. If I had to do it over again, I would probably get the black version of it. The silver shows through the grill alot. Maybe my eyes just are not use to it. I will let you know when I charge it.

Re: r134 condenser

I looked for a black one and could only find it in a 16 X 26. Do you think a bigger one would fit? My bolt holes measure 16X28.

Re: r134 condenser

I do not think one any bigger would fit with ease. Someone on here bought a black one from american radiator if I remember right. Looks like the same one as I have to me. any taller and it would hit the hood bracket, i guess you could lower it, but no air would pass.

Re: r134 condenser

The condenser isn't bad at $52 but they charge $22 shipping. Shipping is getting brutal. I bought a part from a guy in California and he charged me $35 to ship it here. $40 part and $35 in shipping. Brutal

Re: r134 condenser

I'm just curious and not critical about why you want to change the condenser? I know that's a commonly recommended "upgrade" but I am not finding it necessary. After a very careful AC rebuild and POA re-calibration to 26.5psi, my AC system is so far blowing 40 degrees at the center vent, no matter what, with the stock condenser. It's a stock 402 with stock clutch fan and radiator if that helps.

Re: r134 condenser

I admit that I have not had this truck in the hot summer yet, but I am familiar with 134a conversions. I guess it is possible that the original condenser would work in the hottest parts of the country, but I doubt it. If I lived where the temps did not get over 95 or so, I would have left it alone. The head pressure goes to high in the hot summer when at a stop light, which makes the air not as cold, hard on the compressor, ect. at least this has been my experience. My radiator developed a leak and it was a great time to address this potential problem, not to mention that I do residential a/c for a living, so it is not a big deal for me.

Re: r134 condenser

My condenser was in good shape so I just tried it. I do it myself, too, which obviously makes a trial more cost effective. Since you're a real AC guy it will be valuable to hear what you think so please let is know how it comes out.

Re: r134 condenser

Got it charged and it works great. The head pressures are great also. It would not be fair to say without a doubt, that it will work in the summer idling, but i think it will. It is just not hot outside. I was able to only have fittings made to connect to the existing lines, so changing back would be quick and easy. The fittings were $45. The first shop I went to wanted 100.00 for the fittings.

Re: r134 condenser

Thanks for the update. My ac was never any good. I haven't had it charged in 15 years. It always leaked as well. I plan on replacing mostly everything and decided to get the most efficient things for 134. For the price, it seems like a good idea.
