'79 GMC Production

I recently bought a 1979 GMC High Sierra C-15 2wd, 1/2 ton, shortbed with the heavy half package. I have seen the Big 10 long beds but very few short beds and I don't recall seeing a GMC at all. Were many of them made?

Re: '79 GMC Production

Production numbers are difficult to find, 79 was a good year for gm truck sales, 80 and 81 sales were not as good thanks to the 2nd energy crisis. Any 73-87 shortbed truck isn't "rare" but I would say not as common.

Re: '79 GMC Production

I have a total or 120,430 for C1500's with no breakdown for models.
Source is "GMC: The First 100 Years" by John Gunnell

Sounds like a nicely optioned shortbed. May we see more pictures and SPID too.

Re: '79 GMC Production

Heavy Half with Cali emissions? That's weird. I was under the impression the Heavy Half/Big 10 was primarily a way to skirt around emissions requirements and run leaded gas.

Re: '79 GMC Production

My first truck was a 1979 Heavy Half SWB in Shamrock green (special order).

It was a fantastic truck. I drove it for 10+ years. I remember swapping in a spare 455 Olds from one of my 442s in the middle of the winter in upstate New York out in the driveway.

I have seen very few heavy halfs and never another short wide bed.
