350 to 305 tbi engine swap?

So the 350 in my truck finally went out. And although before now I really wouldn't even consider swapping it with a 305 the one I found is in such good condition I am really leaning towards buying it. It looks almost new. My truck is a 92 k1500 and the engine is coming out of a 90 caprice. What would have to be changed over. I don't really want to mess with the new engine too much the guys at the wrecking yard turned it on and it sounded great and had no smoke coming out of it. The previous owner really took care of it. So what needs to be changed? Computer? Injectors? Sensors? Any help would be great guys. Thank you

Re: 350 to 305 tbi engine swap?

Pull the computer from the junk yard with the engine and drop it in the truck. That should be about it off the top of my head at least... Not 100% sure if wiring is identical between the car and truck computers, but those years were simple and I would imagine they are the same, been too long for me to remember these little details. I know the 4L60E didn't show up in the Caprice until '94. So that car should have had a 700R4. With MAYBE a digital speedo/VSS signal (not a speedo cable) if I recall.

Re: 350 to 305 tbi engine swap?

IIRC the EPROM chip may be different for the 5.0 than the 5.7.....maybe the injectors too.....it's been a while since I messed with any OBDI stuff....then it was all mainly TPI.........
Sorry.......

I will say...a significant difference in power dropping to the 5.0.....check on a long block 5.7 and put your stuff on it.............real simple bolt-to-bolt swap....

Re: 350 to 305 tbi engine swap?

I know that it will have less power but will I really feel the difference? I've had 305's before that have felt pretty strong. Last engine had almost no compression in cylinder 5

Re: 350 to 305 tbi engine swap?

I suppose if it was a fresh 350 vs a fresh 305............you could tell the difference......
but since your 350 is shot and the 305 is still fairly strong, you probably won't feel much difference.....
the good thing is, it will get you going again...!...good luck with it.

So since there are some differences between the two like injectors and a few sensors which should I keep. Should I keep the 305 sensors and injectors because that's what was on the engine. Or should I put the sensors and injectors from my 350?

Re: 350 to 305 tbi engine swap?

You should be able to find another TBI 350 engine pretty easy. They made them from 87-95 so finding one should not be a issue. not sure what your budget is but you can get a new long block for under $2000. You can have yours rebuilt fairly cheap too. I would not go backwards to a smaller engine.

Re: 350 to 305 tbi engine swap?

As I tried to explain, I wouldn't use the 350 computer on a 305. Either swap EEPROM or swap the whole computer. Then you won't have to worry about injectors or sensors. Just keep everything together.
