Will this rear axle work?

Found a chevy hd 2500 3500 rear axle 3.73 gears disc brakes for $300. Will it fit on my 64 c10 six lug?

The axle will probably be wider then the stock one. The HD axle is going to be 8 lug with leaf springs. I'm assuming your truck has a coil spring rear axle set up. So you will need to remove the leaf spring mounts from the HD axle and set it up for coil springs. Your drive shaft will likely need to be cut down. With it being a disc brake rear end you need to address the brakes on your truck. Master cylinder, proportioning valve, etc.

Sawzall, torch to cut off leaf spring perches, shock mounts, coil spring mounts and panhard mount off of old rear end.

Mig welder to weld new trailing arm perches at correct angle and for correct pinyon angle, shock mounts, panhard mount, coil spring mounts.


I googled trailing arm perch and this thread was the second hit. It will explain things to you better. He was using a 14 bolt but the process is the same.

Also the axle tube on the AAM housing may be bigger in diameter and the u bolt holes in the trailing arms may be off. Measure first.

Measure the WMS, spring perch center to center and look at the shock mounts. Anything w/ stock disk brakes won't bolt in, which is why the posts above mention cutting and welding. Might want to count the number of lugs as well.

Good information to have. Not looking like the easy project I was anticipating. I also thought about just taking the gears and break setup off it and using my same housing. But if it's an 8 lug then that won't work either. Thanks for the advice.
