I lucked out and found a good exhaust guy. he was old skool. I gave him the x-pipe and the mufflers and he did the rest. He even painted it after he got it welded up.


There have been several posts in the past about exhaust routing on bagged trucks and x-pipes. some from me. i thought i would post pics for everyone to use as reference or examples.

i am actually going to get a mini high torque starter. i dont think the stock starter will come out without removing the header. (i just put the headers on too.) I havent tried, but it doesnt look like it will come out. the mini starter will be further away. i also dont know how i am going to remove the #2,4,5,6 spark plugs either.

however, the old exhaust pipe actaully touched the starter. never wrapped it and never had heat problems.

wow, I'm bringing this thread back to the top! Those photos are great! That is really a tight squeeze there!
I too am wondering how to route in an X-pipe and use the CPP trailing arm crossmember!

What part # are those headers? look like some edelbrock shorties, but wondering how their price compares with some doug's headers...

I'm also wondering about getting a tubular trans crossmember, and possibly routing the exhaust above it as well...

Do you happen to have any photos of your truck from the side of the frame rails, to see how it hangs down below?

Plugs will come out fine, from the bottom, with a wrench instead of a socket.

those are edelbrock hotrod full length block hugger headers and edelbrock mufflers and yes they do clear the stock clutch assembly very nicely. i will be happy to get more pics, but i will say that the exhaust does not hang below any other part of the truck. I told the guy i wanted it high and tight. the rear end does just barely contacts the exhaust when i air the back out.

the sound is awsome. it is not near as loud as flows or magnaflows and has a nice smooth GTO, camaro, vette sound, thats mostly the x.

i have been meaning to get a sound clip, since it seems i am the only person that is running edelbrock SDT mufflers. I was going to go with spintechs, but they were to fat for the tight space, the edelbrocks are almost the same as spins on the inside but quieter. i just posted this and you can kind of hear the system (scroll down).

what do the x pipes do exactly? I have true duels on mine straight to back, but see many pictures on here with x pipes.

Mine are the ceramic coated headers. i think AJUSA.com had the best price, but i got summit to beat their price.

the x equalizes the pressure between both engine banks and eliminates the popping and raspiness you get with straight duals. the x flows much better than the H pipes.

Its 2.5" thick-wall pipe.

I had several muffler shops tell me I was crazy and it couldnt be done. Hopefully you guys can print these pics out and take them to your muffler guy for an example. I was charged $300 for the pipe and labor. I supplied the mufflers and x-pipe. He even painted everything with a silver Duplicolor ceramic paint, which works suprisingly well at holding the heat. i never thought about doing that, but it makes total sense and I would recommend it to everyone.

Sounds like a good price for the excellent quality of workmanship and the paint too!

Thats a good price. I was quoted double that ($600- 700) without tail pipes... I am not sure if I want tail pipes or to just to dump it after the mufflers.

Did he use stainless or aluminized pipe??

Aluminized pipe.

I'd keep shopping around if i was you. I had quotes in the $500-800 range as well.

I actually thought that was pretty good until I heard about your cost. That was for the mufflers and pipes installed. I asked what it would cost if I supplied the pipe and he said not much less. I have heard good things about this shop from people around this area.. Not alot of options around here..

I hope yours turns out the way you want it. If they know how to bend pipe, it shouldn't be too hard for them.
