starter wiring issue

Before the LS swap I'd have to pop the hood to jumper the starter sometimes. After the LS swap I still have to do it. I opened up the ignition switch last night and while there is a little wear on the start nub, I don't think its the issue. Others I've replaced have the nub worn or burned clean off.

I think it's the wiring, but I'm unsure how to continue. Do I just replace the entire purple wire? Where do I get the connectors? Switch, firewall, firewall, starter.

Or where should I start with this?

Question Re: starter wiring issue

Did you put in new wiring are using the stock setup? Need more info.

The stock starter wire coming out of the back side of the fuse block needs to be swapped. It has a resister built into the wire that will drop the voltage down while starting. The HEI system and LS both need a full 12 volts while starting.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: starter wiring issue

If you have the stock wiring harness in your 71 you can jump from the IGN Unfused terminal on the fuse panel to the neutral safety switch(assuming you have an automatic trans.), and test the purple wire all the way to the starter solenoid. If it works then you have a problem in the ignition switch and if not you have a problem in the purple wire with too much resistance to the starter. The firewall bulkhead connector would be the place to look for a poor connection on the purple wire.

You already know that your truck could start in gear this way so be sure to have it in park and pull the coil or HEI wire.
