Windshield sealer

I had a new windshield installed a few weeks ago. The gasket was pretty new, but not brand new (Maybe a year old). It leaks between the windshield and the gasket, not the gasket and the body.

Anybody know of a silicone or some other sealer I can buy to seal it up? I used tire sealer last time and it worked well. I thought there might be something different that might work better.

Thanks!

You may not be successful. Last summer, I had the windshield replaced in my '71. The glass guy reused the fairly new gasket. Same as yours, it had a leak between the glass and gasket (both lower corners).. After four attempts, over a 5 month period of time, to seal the leak, he re-installed the windshield using a new gasket..

Re: Windshield sealer

I agree, I'd just take it out and replace the gasket. Does your truck have the stainless trim in the gasket?

Do you know what brand of windshield they put in it? There is also a chance the windshield isn't shaped exactly as the OEM. Opinions may differ but I like the Plinkington windshields with the tint at the top, and Precision gaskets. I have a trick I use for the stainless trim if needed

I had the old windshield installed last year with a new gasket. I used the same gasket. Might have to buy a new one if I cannot get it to stop.

Not off hand. I would have to look. It is a reputable shop, but there was only 1 option for a tinted windshield with the tint across the top. It has the chrome molding with a Precision gasket. I found out the hard way that some of the other gaskets are garbage.

Re: Windshield sealer

From what I understand all the new gaskets are still made for stock thickness glass. Unfortunately, from what I have seen the new replacment glass is thinner than stock so leaks develop. Maybe try a butyl or urethane sealer. The butyl is what was recommended originally where the gasket seals to body at the corners. Reason I used my stock glass even though not perfect.

After looking at it a bit more last night, that seems to be the case with this windshield. It looks to be about .05" thinner than what the original would have been. Unfortunately, the original was long gone before I bought the truck.

I will try the butyl. Somebody had a post with some 3M sealer, but they must have removed it. I have the email that was sent when they replied, so I will try that sealer.

Re: Windshield sealer

I just had an idea. Have you verified the second lip, on the back edge of the windshield gasket has been pulled up and over the lip in the cab?

https://youtu.be/SOU_0HpS7To

About 15:45 in the video he talks about it.

Maybe the lip just isn't seated properly in those lower corners?

Re: Windshield sealer

Do NOT use silicone - use the butyl. Silicone will fail in automotive glass applications, and then the butyl has a hard time sticking to it.

I will check it out, but it looked like it was definitely coming from between the window and the gasket, not the gasket and the body. Thanks!

UPDATE - I just looked. The seal is where it is supposed t be.

Yes, it will work. I prefer a flow grade (liquid) sealer, but for a single use it's crazy expensive, since the pump alone costs around $70.

Re: Windshield sealer

Yah truckster, I deleted it when I read more thoroughly. The 3M product is generally what you put between the body and the rubber. I read the CRL770 and that sounds promising, since it never dries....

Wow..it was a mess, but that stuff worked nice! I put it around the whole windshield between the windshield and the gasket, and between the gasket and the body. No more leaks at all!

Thanks for all the replies!

Re: Windshield sealer

I'm glad it worked. Since it never hardens, it should last the lifetime of your windshield.

I like 3M products. They always work great. The problem is they offer 100 different products with descriptions that are so close, you are not even sure of the difference.

I used the stuff mentioned above and it seems to work great.
