Re: 305 v6 power steering question

I used a wide belt pulley Cadillac pump for my conversion, and made brackets from scratch, came out much like dually's.

I'll have to revise them to raise the pump, as I have just found a two piston air pump I want to engine drive with an electric pulley clutch. The pump looks a lot like the ones I have seen on these years trucks. I will use it for a small air tank under the bed, as my truck will end up as a workable 1 ton service dually flatbed, with hoist and other helpers in place.

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

Okay, this bracket looks like the one in the pics that jbgroby sent me. So if that is the correct one for the more common pump, that would be the way to go IMO. What do you guys think?

If you could make the early bracket work on the later model pump that would be the best option IMO

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

Yeah, that looks like it worked well. He used the pump brackets from a '68-'72 truck, and made his own brackets to adapt them to the V6. I may have to try and find a V6 to use for mockup.

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

It would be a lot easier to have a V6 for mock up.I have an extra front cover but both styles bolt to the motor mount also and I have a couple sets of double groove pulleys.

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

Well, let me see what I can do about finding a V6 to work with. Then I'll need to get a set of brackets and maybe a pulley. Are these V6's set up for a 1/2" belt or a 5/8" belt? Been a long time since I've been around one.........

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

No, not yet. Trying to find a V6 locally that I can use for mockup. I may have to make them without one.........I did find a complete power steering setup for a V6 though.

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

The pic is very small, and not much of a description, but from what I can see, there is nothing there, that has anything to do with fitting a GMC V6 or not. It looks to be just the hydro assist parts.

On a side note, I believe I have found a V6 to work with. One of my neighbors has bought a truck, but just hasn't picked it up yet.

Here's some pictures of my power steering unit.
It's all from a 67 GMC,305.
I have it mounted on my 70 or so 351-C.

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

A minor update.

My neighbor that bought the GMC with the V6 a few months ago, is going to be pulling the engine, and replacing it with a 350 Chevy. I told him I want the V6, and he said no problem. So now it's just a matter of when he gets to pulling the V6. It shouldn't be too long, he just today pulled the 350 from another truck.

offer still stands if you need the factory pulleys & brackets for mock up.

I'll definitely take you up on that when I actually have the engine.

I went and took a look at the engine today and realized that it has a different water pump since it is in a 4000 series truck. I couldn't quite tell if the mounting bosses for the pump brackets are the same or not. It kind of looked like they were. The good news is that the engine has a 2 groove crank and water pump pulley, but that is because the alternator has a 2 groove pulley. But they should work fine for the power steering pump.

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

I think that's called a high mount water pump.
To get the fan up high.
There's at least 4 different variations of the power steering /alternator mounts on the v/6's.
Could you post a picture of the front of it?
Mike./

Yeah, this one has the high water pump. I don't know just what cubic inch this one is though.

I have a low water pump front cover. The crank pulley is the same but the water pump pulley center hole are different.

Re: 305 v6 power steering question

Here is a CL link to a 1968 GMC with a different power steering set up I've not seen before. Almost looks like a Big Block Chevy, but the ad states a low 53,000 mileage/original owner truck; and the truck appears to be original.

Anyone else seen a Factory set-up like this?

Here's the CL listing; Maroon interior too.

That is actually the truck we bought for my brother. Ironically, I was reading this thread because the power steering is bad and I am trying to find a replacement.
