New 383 problems........
So i recently put a 383 in my 82 GM. It has flat top pistons, edelbrock 64cc perf. RPM heads, XE 274 cam, perf RPM intake, 750 edel. carb, and hedman headers through 2 1/4 flowmaster 50's.
My problem is that, well, #1 The drivetrain isn't finished. I am currently still running the T350c and the 3.07 or 3.08 rear gears, which as a combo for this engine are useless. #2 I have some studdering issues under light acceleration from a stop, I have dead spots in acceleration between 2000-3000 rpm, in all gears. Once I hit 3000 the thing is like a rocket. Is my problem most likely timing related, fuel related, or something completley different???? I am worried that i am experincing cam failure. I am also in need of new plug wires as when I touch mine i get ZAPPED!!!! Could this be a contributing factor?!?!?!?!!?! I have a 10" convertor for it, I just need a non lock-up tranny and I wanna switch to a completly different rear end. Suggestion????? Ford 9", Eaton, Detroit? Also, anyone running the XE274, what do you set your timing at??? THANKS!! 910 www.myspace.com/attackaddict

Yes, your wires are Buttco get them replace first, and then see what happens.

I say do a complete tune-up. Just to establish a base line to go off of.

yep, replace em. get a 9" out of a pickup have the bolt pattern redrilled on the axles and drums, not real expensive.

Re: New 383 problems........
i vote new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, as stated to establish a level of integrity. then make adjustments.
make your adjustments in small steps. so you can keep track of the changes.. if you go making changes with worn out parts. you will be like a dog chasing it's tail. the spark plug wires are defiantly shot if you get zapped while touching them. buy quality parts your almost there, nothing like the feel of a new engine running in top form. gett'er done your pal mark |

Your CR should be at 10.5 which means high octane gas. I went with a new posi carrier and 342 gears for my th 350 especially when I found out here I think that you can get a 373 gear set to fit that carrier now, in case I want a 700r. (if you have a 12 bolt) I also went with a 2500 stall on the converter because....... My intake is a dual plane for low end torque with alum; heads. BUT the Desktop dinos that were done for me said that at 2500 rpm I'm only 170 torque and 180 hp max. But just like you are experiencing after 3000 rpm HOLD ON Pretty much matching torque and hp up to 5500 rpm , had 3 DDs done and all had it at 430 to 450 and I will only believe it when i see it. Have fun ,Richard |
