My 1992 GMC 1500 Winter Beater
I just bought a real 'winter' beater. Can I detect from the VIN what tranny I have? 700R4 or 4L60? Thanks in advance.

Re: My 1992 GMC 1500 Winter Beater
Check the glove box and see if the option codes are still there. Otherwise I don't think the VIN will tell you. I have been wrong before but I think it was 93 or 94 before you had the 4L60E. I also believe there was a 4l60 (or 700R4) between the 2.
I believe the 4l60E code is M30

Found it - now I just have to decode it. My M's are MD8 and MX0. Thanks a ton!

Re: My 1992 GMC 1500 Winter Beater
Thanks guys - the code yields '700R4/4L60' and someone else is saying (hopefully not fake news!) in 92 it was 700. When did they start the 4L60 - start of the 93 model year?

Re: My 1992 GMC 1500 Winter Beater
The 4L60 and the 700R4 are the exact same transmission. GM just renamed the 700R4. The 4L60E came out in 93 and is the electronic version but is essentially the same.

Yes - just a different wrapper. My 92 has many similar features to my 70.

Re: My 1992 GMC 1500 Winter Beater
Onto my fuel lines - does anyone have a diagram they can share. Excluding the fill cap connections what are the 3 other ports (1) carb supply (2) return (3) charcoal canister? What is the 4th line that runs back along inside the frame?

Re: My 1992 GMC 1500 Winter Beater
I don't have a diagram handy but the fourth line is your rear brake line. It should go to a T above the axle on the drivers side and split to each wheel cylinder.

Re: My 1992 GMC 1500 Winter Beater
Thanks - once I pulled my bed up I figured it out, the PO had installed a new brake line and did not remove the old one. It terminates near the gas tank branch off (and out of site) from the bottom. Another landmine. Never a dull moment.
