Guys with tachs?
Ok, I got this tach cluster for my 84, its out of an 80's C50/60 and I've got a question or two.
First is, after hooking up the tach can I just plug the instrument cluster in to the old hook up and will it work? or do I need to do something with the circuit board?

Re: Guys with tachs?
The circuit board is different. You need to replying and adapt the wiring

Re: Guys with tachs?
You'll need to know what year the tach cluster came from. depending on the year it may be plug and play.

Re: Guys with tachs?
80 up should have the orange font. I put an orange one in my old 80 short bed.
I just compared the circuits to the cluster originally in my truck. Turned out to be the same. Plugged it in and everything worked great. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Guys with tachs?
I just did a repair on my 79. Pretty ez stuff. If yours is the same as mine, which I assume it is I would forget the circuit board and just wire in the tach with some wire. The tachs are clearly marked on the rear posts +, - and tach. Just wire the the + to a switched ignition source, - to ground and the other wire to the tach terminal on your distributor.
Then you don't have to worry about the circuit board and wether the rest of the rig is wired for the tach. Here was an excellent article, helped repair my tach which was reading about 1000rpm too high. http://howtoalmanac.com/kevin/projec...chfixtruck.htm

Re: Guys with tachs?
I am just wiring the tach in the same way it was wiring in to the old truck, with the three wires coming out of it. My question is about the rest of the gauges, I noticed that the wiring harness out of the c50/60 doesn't have as many connections as the harness that is in my truck. Plus some of the connecting points don't line up with c50/60 cluster.
Can I move some of the connecting points in the harness to line up with the circuit board?

Re: Guys with tachs?
Make sure the cluster out of the C50 doesn't have a amp gauge, if so your looking at a fire. Change it out if it does, then repin the connector so everything goes where it is supposed to go. The tack will more than likely read incorrectly, here's everything showing how I fixed mine: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=503733
Im glad you got yours fixed too bilfman!

Re: Guys with tachs?
4000 tach is no doubt from a 6 cylinder diesel. Would have to be reworked to read an 8 cylinder correctly.

Re: Guys with tachs?
If you add that potentiometer to the back im pretty confident that it could be adjusted to where it is supposed to be on a 8 cyl.

Re: Guys with tachs?
maxed out at 4k rpm? you need at least 5k for a v8. you should look into getting an 80's camaro tach

Re: Guys with tachs?
You could get a replacement 5k or 7k tach for that cluster since the tach is independent from the cluster curcit and has its own harness.
