89 tbi egr/headers?
I have an 89 tbi going in to my 87. I want to add headers in the most cost effective way possible. What do I do about the egr?

Re: 89 tbi egr/headers?
The EGR is part of the ECM loop so you need to keep it or have it deleted by tuning (new chip). Whatever headers fit your chassis will get the job done. You just need an o2 port near the collector.

Re: 89 tbi egr/headers?
if full length headers its best to swap to a heated o2 sensor . lots of threads on this for your reading .
i my self dont care for headers . lots of extra heat and noise under the hood .

Re: 89 tbi egr/headers?
Heat for sure. Mine are ceramic coated & still put off some serious temps. I haven't had any issues on the noise level though. Are they louder than cast iron manifolds? Yep. But I don't notice any difference w/the hood shut. I also ground the head flanges true & made my own 3/8" thick collector flanges so zero leaks vs. the repeat leaker on my exhaust manifolds (pass side).

Re: 89 tbi egr/headers?
Thanks for the help. It is my sons build. We are going mid length headers with a o2 bung in the collector so I think a regular o2 sensor will work. The noise is part of the fun and the heat is not that bad. But that is the beauty of our trucks to each his own. I truly appreciate your assistance!

There may be air injection tubes in the exhaust manifolds. Any chance that's what you see? |

Re: 89 tbi egr/headers?
Possibly. I just keep seeing headers that say for models without egr.

Re: 89 tbi egr/headers?
I had my chip/tune done w/the air pump option deleted since there wasn't one. But mine was/is a 1TON dually & didn't have CATs either.

Re: 89 tbi egr/headers?
I. On my 94 I deleted the egr and 02 sensor with out tuching the computer and it never made a difference. I have long tube headers and no cats . Same amount of power. Runs the exact same. And never had a problem. I also got rid of the e vap canister. You can tell where I live there is no inspection
