Ya but for how long can it tow? I have a 2001 F150 I purchased new off the showroom floor with a tow package. Can't tell you how many times I have blown the transmission and the rear end on that truck.

Those ecoboosts have been known to blow head gaskets have turbo problems when they get worked anywhere near the upper end of there weight ratings. I know two different guys who tried to pull campers with them. Both campers were within the tow ratings on the truck. Both had problems overheating at any real grades. One sold the truck and bought an f250 because he melted the coolant seals down in the driver side turbo and it started leaking externally. The other had to have the dealer put head gaskets in it under warranty. He sold it shortly there after as well. For Harry homeowner stuff they seem to be pretty good. For real truck work... there’s a reason Ford still only offers v8s and diesels in there superduty’s. Towing numbers are impressive only if the truck can hold it together long term in my opinion.

we have been looking for a new truck for Mrs Grumpy and looked st the ford turbo V6 and found out they have a design flaw with the water pump thats actually mounted inside the engine and when they go it's a total rebuild with no warning . No thanks .

I dunno who told you that but they are tragically misinformed. The water pump on the eco boost trucks is external like any old water pump, only pays 2.4 hours to r&r. We have 30+ of the 150s from 15 up to 21 with the 3.5 ecoboost and haven't had any major notable concerns or problems with them. I work for a public water utility in the fleet department so I see it all. These trucks are loaded down from the word go and not used in a nice manor their entire service life. We've seen a few high pressure pumps go, easy fix, and a few water pumps, again an easy fix.

My uncle lemon lawed 4 diesel trucks in litterly 3 years. It was 2 GM's with constant injector issues. A Ford where the turbo blew under load after 6 months of constant issues with 4 of the 6 months in the shop. A Dodge which was the best till it grenaded on the 14 fly going up hill. I get it if you really want to tow heavy they lay down the power, but I personally don't ever see myself buying one. That is with the state of current, and recent smog systems. I read there is supposedly a new horizon that provides hope, but i will save judgement till then. When I was getting my 18 Silverado I really really wanted a 1 ton crew cab dually, but with the 6.0 gasser. The consumer side of the dealerships were throwing huge discounts for diesels, and the commercial side had none with beds. Plus would not get me one with a bed. So I got a more reasonable truck for my life. |

Yea I agree. I had an l5p duramax for a little while when they first came out in 2017. It’s still used as a field service truck now. It’s got a service bed and a 12,000 lb auto crane. It’s got all the power you’ll ever need in loaded form. Before we put the bed on it when it was brand new I couldn’t believe how quick it was for a stock truck. We really haven’t had much problems out of it. One of these days I’ll buy an L5p for my self. The 6.7 power strokes we’ve got, we’re all getting deleted at 60K because of all the def related problems they were having. With the crackdowns on deleting over the last year year or so those days are probably over. All of the big three run good diesels these days. The problem is the emissions bs they are mandated to run. The def System has single handedly killed the reliability and economy of them.
I actually did injectors on an lb7 duramax yesterday. I had forgotten how relatively simple they are compared to the new diesels.

My first thought was, "Good way to get the average guy in over his head while towing." I've seen some pretty sketchy towing in my life and convincing folks they can go even heavier makes me laugh internally but just a little because I'm on the road with these folks.
As far as turbos go my father in law used to tell me all the time the only engines that need turbos are diesels and airplanes. At the time he had two turbo diesel john deere tractors and a Beechcraft Bonanza.

I don't see much of anyone in anything these day who seem to know the golden rule: "Tow Slow!". You are not driving the same vehicle when you are towing. After hitching that trailer you are hopping into a vehicle you just changes. Might not feel like it. Might not even feel that trailer back there. But stopping or even being pushed on a turn, especially while braking, are another story. It's like when 4wd got popular and all the newbies where enjoying getting up to speed with ease and seemingly better handling in snow. Then they needed to stop and they learned a new lesson. With towing, no matter how string the tow vehicle brakes are, strong the suspension, powerful the engine is, if the vehicle weight is that much less than what you are pulling you are in an unsafe vehicle and only you can make it safe... or safer at least. Still, consider road conditions and hang back more than usual. I see knuckleheads with landscape trailers loaded up whizz buy my place on the 30 mph road doing 50-60 going wide around the curves, rain or shine. They don't appear to me to be fully conscious, or plum ignorant. Certainly not thinking about that trailer back there or the person coming the other way that they will harm.

Regardless of the 2021 F150 ratings, Ford is in a position to eliminate the F250 all together. They wont because it's such a popular platform but between the half ton's capabilities cutting into 3/4 ton territory, and the meager price difference between the f250/350, why have all 3? I just bought a 2020 f350 Powerstroke. The price difference is only $800 over the f250 and there is no major difference in suspension and ride quality between the two anymore.

Supposedly, the 2020 differences are the front coil body is 2-3mm larger in diameter, an added top mount over load spring on the rear pack (thus higher load rating), the badge, and $800. I drove both and there was absolutely no difference in ride quality. I took the f350 CCLB with 12,400lb rating.

All the diesels are good now. Mine is 13 years old only a few minor problems like fuel lines rusting out . But mine is pre emission it's a 5.9 and has very few emission controls like a cat the 6.7 has a bunch of emission stuff that were problematic at first but has been sorted out.
But if I were to buy a new truck it would be gas, they make good power and torque. And at least around me gas is cheaper than diesel

My daily is an F150 with the 3.5 ecoboost and the highest tow package for it's year which is around 10k lbs. Been a great truck and while I've had it over it's GVW many times with weight in the box at no point have I felt comfortable towing more than 5k lbs with it.

Isn't rear axle heat an issue? There's a reason the ring gear diameter increases on larger trucks. How is a half-ton truck expected to pull loads like that with a ring gear of under 10 inches?

It's getting stupid 3500 trucks pulling 31k pounds . No way I'd do that I pull heavy but at most 20k . Truck gets squirrely over that. And here in NY you cant legally tow that much without an R endorsement.
It's stupid just like the new improved headlights that blind everyone . DOT has its head up it butt
