Bench seat foam "help"

Hey Guys !

I want to hear your experiences with replacement Bench Seat Foams ! I know of 2 manufactures: American Cushion & PUI. and I'm sure there are imports also.

I have a 71-72 Full Foam Seat and a new cover from Truck Seats. My upholsterer says I need new cushions or to have him build new foams. Because he's so busy he would prefer I buy the foams pre-formed. But I'm reading some are too dense and people are having issues with head room and leg clearance between the seat and steering wheel.

Help me make a decision on what mfg. of foams to use, tell me the good, bad & ugly !!!

Thanks in advance !!!
Gary

Re: Bench seat foam "help"

I bought the set from LMC and are pretty happy with them. They seem like good foams and fit well but they did push me a couple of inches closer to the roof.

Re: Bench seat foam "help"

Thanks !!! heathbirkendahl, Do you know who made the foams you had to cut down ?
This is the kind of info I'm looking for, do you know if it was PUI or American Chusion ?

Oh and did you have the full foam seat frame or the standard seat frame?

Re: Bench seat foam "help"

My original seat looked just like yours if not worse. I bought new covers from Brothers Trucks but next time would get them from Tim. I then went to Fred Meyers a local grocery and hardware store and bought foam from them. i bought 3" tall and just wider than the original seat. I used spray glue from 3M and i went to a garage sale and for 5.00 i bought an electric knife. So i glued the new foam to the old foam and then started forming it with the knife, then i used an air grinder with 80 grit sand paper to smoth over the edges. I then put the cover on, use the hog ring pliers and for under 200.00 i rebuilt my seat. Now it is not perfect, but it looks good and is very comfortable. not to hard to do if you ask me.

Re: Bench seat foam "help"

That came out nice!

Add me to the list of "new foam was too high" people. I'm 5'8" and my head is only +/-1" from the ceiling. I've left it along for a year hoping it would settle in some, which is has, but nowhere near enough, I'm going to have to undo the bottom cover and trim at least an inch off.

I can just tell by your pic that your bottom foam is more factory correct than the one I got.

Re: Bench seat foam "help"

I used the full custom fab seat rails. Worked out well I fit in the truck now. When I did my seats I used PUI seat foam if everyone says they are not stiff I can't see it. I am contemplating putting the old upper seat back foam back in. Bottom feels ok on long drives. The back foam makes it feel like I have a pillow at my lower back like a radical lumbar support. Very comfortable.

I used Amercan cushion industries foam in my Chevelle and they were perfect in every way. If I redo the truck completely I will use them.

I have an 3 year old memory foam mattress I was gonna throw out. Pretty firm. Do yall think that would work to rebuild my bench seat?
