Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
I just put a brand new mechanical fuel pump on the 350 in my '72. Nothing fancy, just a NAPA OEM type. It ran great for maybe a hundred miles and now it's shooting gas out the weep hole. Would the diaphragm have failed that quickly?

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
It’s happened to me before on my 53 Kaiser. I’ve had a few bad experiences with mechanical Napa pumps. Still under warranty hopefully?

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
If I want to keep it mechanical, what's the best one to get?

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
I used a precision fuel pump after having 2 failed Napa pumps. Got it from o Reilly’s. Two years and still going strong. Don’t drive the car very much though, too afraid to damage it and parts are almost irreplaceable.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
And don't forget a fuel pressure regulator. Most fuel pumps put out more psi than the 5-6 psi that a typical carb requires. Causes a lot of carb. problems.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
I've had great luck with Holley fuel pumps. 7.5 psi no fuel regulator required.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
Or even an Edelbrock - mine works great - no regulator for the carb.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
Had the same thing happen to me a few months ago. Old pump [350 V8 in '71 GMC Jimmy] worked about 11 years, then gave out in downtown rush hour traffic. Got towed home. Replaced it with one from O'Reilly's, and got about 100 miles before it was showering the lower engine bay with 93 octane gas! China. Got towed home again, and got my money back from O'RAP, then got a Delphi from AutoZone. They assured me it was made in Troy, Michigan. As I was applying RTV to the gasket, I found the fine print on the box: Korea. But it works OK so far.
They just don't make 'em here anymore. [That may change due to politics, IDK.] Where they are being made, they ain't making them right, for the most part. I think it's a plot to make us all drive Priuses.

Federal Mogul bought Carter out, but still marketed Carter AFB carbs. I looked for a new AFB in 2005, but had to get an Edelbrock. I haven't seen a Carter mechanical pump in years. I hope it's just me and I've been looking in the wrong places. But I dunno.

Thanks. I should get one to keep in the between-the-seats-console just in case my Asian one decides to join its most honorable ancestors.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump Failure
I use Carter electric. Flip the switch, wait about 10 seconds, Pump the pedal twice and it lights right up with a turn of the key after sitting for weeks. Been using these for 30 years. My old 58 has a mechanical for nostalgic reasons but that is the only car I cannot get to run right. I am having all sorts of issues with pump pressure and the Edelbrock carb.
