SM465 Trann top plate removal -Help
Do you know how to remove the top plate from an SM465? All the bolts are out and I can lift it about 1/2 inch. The linkage is hashed and I'm stranded. I have a guy who will rebuild it if I bring it to him and I live in the middle of no where (no garage).

The tranny has to be halfway into reverse in order for the reverse shift fork to clear the cluster gears so the cover can be removed. If you have the shift lever out, stick it back in and push it over and about halfway down into reverse and the cover will lift right off.

Re: SM465 Trann top plate removal -Help
Ok, that's great, but if it goes together to the point I could not see the gear or fork move away from eachother and with ease. How do you get it back apart when it refuses to shift anywhere close to reverse. Transmission was not apart other then to reseal. Now it won't come back apart because it won't go halfway into reverse. I need ideas. Please.

Just take it to the guy rebuilding it and let him deal. If he's rebuilt a few of these he can get the lid off
