LS1/T56 installed!

Ladies and gentlemen, it is finally in. I still have some motor mount issues with the vette headers to work out but it is VERY CLOSE. I can feel it now.
Next up is a custom shifter for the 6 speed, having my LS1 driveshaft lengthened and working in the hydraulic clutch linkage.

Almost, almost...

What does it take to get one of those transmissions hooked up behind a pre-86 350sbc? I want the 6 speed, but I don't want to have to deal with all the new "fang dangled" computer stuff on multi-port injected engines.

The fuel injection stuff is the beauty of the monster IMHO. However you can hook up a T56 6 speed easily with a LT1 six speed tranny (93-97) F-Body if you are using an older block setup.

That is cool. I haven't seen anyone else with an LS1 and a 6-speed yet. I'm going old school with a 454/th400 combo in my 67, but I'm sure yours will do a burnout just as well as mine!!!!

I think it will. This motor makes 345 hp and 390 ft pds stock. Then I did a cam/springs and milled the heads alittle. Should around 400 horse and 500 torque...

About time someone else went with the 6 speed behind the LS1 swap. Looking good.

I especially like the .49 final gear of the 6 speed (or is that only the six speed in the corvette?). With a final drive of .49 you can get away with 4.10's easily.

Thumbs up

I think there are a lot of us that would like to have this set up- myself included. There's nothing like rowing thru the gears with a nice sounding set of pipes, especially if you're a former "double clutchin fool from the motor pool" Keep us posted on the progress. luv those headers!

For all you guys(me included) who want a carb instead of messing with computers and wiring, there are now intakes available for LS1's that are for a four barrel carb. I think Chevy makes them now, I just saw it in a magazine somewhere. The LS1 makes a lot of power, I have had a 98 Z28 1LE and a 2000 Z28 and they were a blast, but they wont have the torque that a nicely built big block would have, but they will rev a lot quicker and higher.

Keep in mind that there is no dizzy on the LS1 and no way to add one so you will have some fun with that. I have heard of carbed LT1's since they have a sort of mounted weird crank trigger/dizzy idea called optispark or (optipuke ).

For $350 several compaines on the net will modify and simplify the hook up of these wiring harnesses for you so that you can retain everything, fuel injection, self learning and calibrating mass air flow (no more swapping jets), 8 seperate coil packs (one for every cyclinder). These motors also have knock sensors right underneith the intake and automatically retard timing anytime detonation is sensed. That is only the begenning. Most of these motors were underrated from GM. The silverado SS guys have taken the trucks to the dyno with only a LS6 cam and put down 380 RWHP!!! This is with the front driveshaft removed of course. They are still slow because they weigh in the 7,000 pound range.

I just think it's cool

I fully agree, when the truck gets running I will see what kind of shape the engine and trans are in and when I am ready a LS1 will be in the menu as an option. This year, the new LS2 comes out in the Vette' and offers 405 hp stock! The new Z-06 rumors to have 500. Damn.

Ask anyone who has made any power with an LT1 and they will tell you why.

The optispark setup on the LT1 was riddled with problems:

http://delteq.com/opti_design.htm

That explains it better than I would. If you read anything, read the 4th paragraph, but all of it is good reading, especially if you own a stock LT1, or one that hasn't had the water pump or anything else replaced on it.

I found a whole writeup at a website (using Google) which covered all of the shortcomings of the LT1, it was very informative. LT1 < LS1.
