Looks Are Deceiving 1971 C10 LWB Rebuild

Well It time to start up the rebuild. I purchased with the intent of a simple restoration but the more and more I tore it down the more I found. Oh well!

You will need to become a subscribing member to list parts for sale

Re: Looks Are Deceiving 1971 C10 LWB Rebuild

I know the feelings I have had fender touch ups end up with total paint strippings, tune ups ending with frame off restos. Simple and quick little builds on these trucks may be a thing or the past well at least to the level I have decided upon.I have three this style 1 68, two 70's one of the 70's was gonna be the "cheaper" build of the three. It has now turned into a frame off as well with the 327 that I got with it but some engine upgrades and instead of the 3oot a T-5 from a hybrid Camaro S-10 two trans deal. I have even gone so far as to split the bedside form the inner stuctures to take care of the surface rust. things like that and it still is gonna be the "cheap"one? Oh yeah, I have a tilt column that I ground the shifter stuff off of and filled the holes primed it to paint body color to look like a factory floor shift tilt. I have a tach vac dash for it and some bucket seats with a fold down console similar to the buddy buckets but they were from a custom truck from 1993. I will have them covered to look like the seats should have from 70. and of course I will be adding power steering and brakes and disc 6 lugs still. Yeah I know what it is like when things go overboard and out of control.

Re: Looks Are Deceiving 1971 C10 LWB Rebuild

New guy here that would like a quick summary of how you did the roof repair. What is the grey insulating type material? And is the black material POR-15 or something similar? I have this nightmare about the '69 I just bought that might need the same repair. Can you kinda' walk me through it? Thanks..............

I'll bet that whole truck is filled with secrets and bondo ! sad when you trust someone but a shiny paint job doesn't always mean a good deal ! thats why i always buy failed projects they have little to hide !

Re: Looks Are Deceiving 1971 C10 LWB Rebuild

I have all new Mog suspension parts across the front, new brake calipers, brake pads, rotors, lines, McGaugay 3' drop spindles and springs and drop shocks. I've already had the upper and lower ball joints (Mog) replaced also. I will be using POR15 and a coat of chassis coat black to go on top for the frame. I want to replace the Steering gear box while torn down. are there any issues to consider for that removal and installation.

I started putting parts back together, looks like its coming along. I'm having a hard time trying to get the lower control arm bumpers in. Any suggestions.

Soak in boiling water until they are pliable. Also turn the upper bumpers over.

Re: Looks Are Deceiving 1971 C10 LWB Rebuild

They (whoever you got the drop kit or rotors from)should be able to tell you but many drop kits and rotor upgrades require 16 inch wheels from what I have read. No experience with it just it always kept me from upgrading cause i didnt want to add an additional 1000-1500 for wheels and tires.

Re: Looks Are Deceiving 1971 C10 LWB Rebuild

This is why I would never buy anything with fresh paint , A friend of mine wanted a c10 we were at a car show in tn I found him a solid truck there for sale but found a fresh painted one and let the solid one go and bought the shiny one LOL that was a few years ago ,, I've never asked him but I bet he wish's he would have bought the solid one ! Good luck on your build they can all be fixed if you have the cash to pour over them ,,,,
