How do I make the truck loud???

Every redneck at my school has really loud pipes on their trucks. I was wondering should I get brand new pipes and then get glass packs? The guys at my school have them very loud z71's, I was wanting to make my truck very loud and at decent price.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

put a dump coming off the header pipe. make it with a cable pull so you can open it when you want and leave it closed when you don't.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

Flowtech makes some pretty decent manual cutouts that you weld in the exhaust system. You can bolt on or remove little blocker plates that allow the exhaust to exit right behind the muffler. Its quite a bit quieter than open headers, but still obnoxiously loud. I used to use a nut as a spacer with the plates which gave it a really throaty growl while keeping it a little quieter. Just a warning though, its pretty tough to keep them from leaking when they are corked.

I think I payed about 30 bucks each for mine

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

headers & no mufflers, just resonator tips sounds good on the old '68. And it's not the tacky straight pipe on manifolds kinda loud either. But I have to watch out for cops & back off the pedal when I see one

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

Proud to be a red neck right!
ya.
Got to run open headers not open manifolds tho.My buddy was running open manifolds on his 96 z71 and it sounded like he had crappy mufflers.
Got to go with some headers.
Heres an idea, get a build your own headers kit. But instead build some zoomie, tractor pull 'n headers. Just like a top fuel drag car. One pipe for each exhaust port. Then put them though your hood or fender so the flames from the unburnt fuel can shoot out. Ya. Anybody can be loud but you got to be diffrent.
I think the cops will like that!

Here's a wild idea ---- why not put those douches' in their place and run your truck quieter than those dumb-A's, but faaaaaaaaster. Ultimate sleeper

A nitrous kit would do it ----- an extra 100-150 hp might have your truck runnin 14's or 15's -- enough to put most Z-71 pimp boys in their place

Quiet power is cool ---- loudness just equals fewer chicks for you.

I thoroughly enjoy pulling my beater-stocker up next to some hickoid jacka$$ in his lifted and loud Z71, F150, RAM..etc. at a stop light and tearing him a new one by the time we hit the next light......can you say "shrinkage!".

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

I find this thread interesting. The sound is referenced around a Z71 but I wonder how the Z71 sounds when compared to the true muscle car sounds on the 60's and 70's. I must must be getting old because when I think of hp sounds I think of muscles cars and not a Z71. Come to think of it I am getting old because I am thinking of ways to tone down my 402bb.

Old school philosophy 101 says, "If you can't make it run, make it loud!"

One or the other, your choice. Mine is louder than the Lexus, but the Lexus will outrun it. Yeah, it sucks. I wanna put some rice-burner fart cans on her car, but she doesn't see the humor in it. Go figure...

Ah, go ahead. I dare ya..
This thread could easily be turned into an which is cooler thread, old school muffs or new school crazy loud straights.
Being from the older group I like the sound of the 60's Hemi mufflers, Chevelle mufflers, Corvette mufflers. With the right tailpipe length and diameter they idled and cruised with just a small increase in sound over most stockers but really TALKED when you stomped the go pedal. For years I ran dual hemi muffs behind my 350 Olds with short dumps and loved it. Ya, it TALKED.
Times change and what we knew was cool the younger generation don't. They have decided louder is better so then came all those long big diameter tubes hangin under the rear of them. I call them goober tubes for no better words. JMO, louder isn't always better. Sorry if I stepped on anybody's toes. JMO

You're right, most of them sound nothing like a performance engine or a musclecar. The first 3 are what poretty much all the kids trucks sound like around here:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=umngvNqNbT4
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wtx0VJHZOfw&feature=related

The next 3 are what a musclecar with some horsepower sounds like. All loud, but lots of difference in tone.

Aaahhh! Just make sound recordings and pipe it out weatherproof speakers. Sound like a muscle car one minute, a harley the next, or a Honda civic or a tug boat or a freight train . Pull up to someone beating his boombox and play Motzart

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

i would say to run long headers with 2 3/4 pipe with 12 in glass packs would realy do the trick then break in you packs by putting water and warming the pack up by reving the engine. works for me by putting most vehicles to shame.

That might work on a 96-98 Vortec, but there are quite a few LSx Vortecs out there that straight RUN.

I should know, I've tuned a lot of them in my area, including my own

???? Are you talking about the thread starter and his '70 GMC?, or his z-71 arch enemies?

A late model Z-71 is a fine truck for running 17's, maybe mid-16's at best. A 96-98 would be slower - 17's - 18's.

The high school parking lot in Whiteville , NC probably is not a hotbed for performance oriented owners that put a real tune on them. Just jack it up (preferably a body lift) as high as dad's credit card will allow, cut the cat off and run megaphone exhaust tips straight out the back.

A modest power adder would serve well -- although a higher capacity fuel pump would be needed to keep it from leaning out too much

Lol, I was talking about his z71 pals. Trust me when I say I've got my brother's '99 Z71 (5.3L) running faster than mid 16s. It's amazing what you can unleash when you know what you're doing in an ECM tune Kiss all of GM's electronic babysitters goodbye, and dial it in with a wideband, and run some good fuel

I agree however, that they most likely are stock with a body lift, some offset rims, and straight pipes. They (96-98) sound HORRIBLE at WOT with straight pipes.

Yeah, cause everybody loves that ever-so-sweet sound of a late model Z71 with with straight pipes in OD doing about 45-50 MPH. They sound like an old 2 cyl John Deere w/o a muffler because they don't have enough back pressure and they are turning about 1600 RPM in OD. There's a significant difference in making it just loud and making it sound good while being loud.

Oh how I SOOO agree with this. I get so tired of the yuppie country boy wanna be's makin their new truck "loud" just so they can be "redneck." I got passed by one of these idiots the other day (guess his gas is cheaper than mine) and he had apparently been running the crap out of his LOUD truck. It had the distinct sound of pipes comin off of cast iron and after he got around me I could smell unburnt fuel from his tail.

My advise, make sure it doesn't sound like you have bad mufflers. There is nothing wrong with a good deep throaty growl that is still not deafening.
