The worse thing you could do to our trucks!

I wish I had pics of this..... There is a guy here in town with a 67 LWB Chevy that has...get this...A Datsun 6CYL and a 5 speed. I couldnt believe it when he told me. I had forgotten my phone at home. So I wasnt able to get any pics. He was putting gas in his truck and checking the oil. I seen his truck walked over and was talking to him. I guess it came out of a early to mid 70's 240,260,280. I am not sure. I could stop myself in asking why? He told me its was easier on gas. I feel thats just wrong.

Re: The worse thing you could do to our trucks!

I see nothing wrong with that....

My only issue with it would be how long would it hold up?

I give him props for creativity.

I'm waiting for the day I can make my truck into a 20-25mpg hybrid (I'm serious.)

I agree with 67CR, I think it would be cool to make a truly good mileage making vehicle out of an old truck. Start with a 2wd short, run a 4.3 using stock integrated FI, or aftermarket FI, modern five speed manual and 3.23s or 3.08 gears. It would be slow but might get 18 or 19 for mileage. I think breaking over 20mpg would be really tough though.

I meant actual hybrid. GM's new 2 mode system in the tahoe/silverado and their GMC counterparts is *supposed* to be good for 22 city 21 Highway. Imagine what that could do in a 3,800 lb truck as opposed to a 5,500-6,000 lb bohemith!!! And to top it off, the two mode system uses a 6.0L for power!

Yes, it would be EXPENSIVE, and I mean EXPENSIVE, as hell to do it... but maybe not in 10 years?

Heck, we may even have hydrogen conversion kits in 10-20??? years!!!

If I'm still around in 20 years, I highly doubt my 67 would be gasoline (or at least gasoline only) powered.

I REALLY like this idea. Seems like you should be able to hit a scrap yard for a totaled Tahoe pretty soon and get everything you need for somewhere in the neighborhood of $10K?

I went all-in. I went to engineering school so I could learn how to build a nuclear powered '71 Blazer.

I'm with you camino, there are some things that are sacrilegious(sp?) I'm all for gas mileage, but buy an Accord

I don't think it's the worse thing you can do, keep in mind you could have walked over and it been a FURD 4 banger.

SOME people would say putting a new style stepside be on it would be the worse thing you could do.

...or chop the top, or JC Whitney the crap out of it. At least you can't see the engine/tranny mod

Now that I think about it, if the Datsun tranny is anything like my old Toyota truck it has a hydraulic clutch... I'd really like to see how he set his clutch up!

Re: The worse thing you could do to our trucks!

My classic American truck has doors, fenders, suspension components, engine components, interior pieces, and electrical components all made in China or elsewhere outside the US.

I built my truck with foreign tools and sanding materials

I guess I'm not as American as everyone else.

I won't apologize for not being able to afford 40 year old NOS. Nor will I apologize for not having the skills to properly repair 40 year old panels

Re: The worse thing you could do to our trucks!

I don't think I would have used a datsun 6 cylinder, but I have considered a 4.3 or a supercharged 3.8 in mine. As far as the import/american debate, consider this: I work on cadillacs and buicks, at a dealer, 2 of our vehicles are made in Germany and one of them is made (Parts, and assembly) entirely in Mexico that I know of. And they still say their American made. It's very rare that I get a part from the parts department that say's made in America on it. Most say Germany, Korea, or Mexico. And the government wanders why our economy sucks!

Funny thing is, if you ever really looked close at one of those old 240z engines, it actually looks like a copy of the old 235 Chevy 6 cylinder with an overhead cam. Makes you wonder where they got the idea for that design??

Unhappy Re: The worse thing you could do to our trucks!

There's a 68 Chevy SWB in a used car lot in Dayton, Oh. , that was put on a Dodge frame with a 318 c.i. in it. They wanted $2,500 for it.

At least the old truck it still on the road. Maybe the engine was sitting around and he wanted to drive it. My friend has a 280Z and it pulls like a mofo with the inline 6.
