wood bed

just wondering
can you put a wood bed kit in place of steel
on a fleet side.

There are kits, I think MaR_K has them. You need to change the front panel and the rear panel. Or find a used wood bed.

Another question to throw in on this one, is there any benefit in buying the wood for the wood kits rather than cutting my own to fit? It seems like I would save some money this way.

The wood tha they sell in the kits is dense wood, and it is a direct bolt on.

I have found it hard to keep a good finish on the wood bed. It is out in the hot Texas sun, any recomendations on wood finishes?????

Varnish has no UV protection. For a daily driver, you could probably stain it and run it, or just leave it alone. I have no ideas about maybe a clear coat???

I have a woodbed on my truck and had problems with finding a decent finish that would last. I had varnish on the boards, but it only lasted about 4-6 months before started to peel and receive water damage. What I have on the boards now is 3 coats of automotive clearcoat. It has been 6 months and the wood looks good as new, and its a lot shinier than the varnish ever was. Only downside is the cost. I had left over clearcoat, used about half a gallon, and this stuff costs about $250/gal.

Auto clear coats like LP would give you the longest protection. If this is a real nice bed and a daily driver, I would get a bed mat that I could put in to protect it and pull out when I show it. Your not going to find anything that will look good and give you long life. It's wood it breathes, it moves, it's difficult. Most boat owners know that a great finish on there wood only lasts about a yr.

I am converting form metal to wood. I have purchased the head board cross braces and rear sill. I need too get the dimentions of the wood so I can cut it. I have all the free walnut I need to do the job. I had seen a thread on wood beds but can't find it. One of my daughters boyfriend has woods class in school so he can cut to fit for me. So if some one can direct me to the dimentions would be great.

I believe the dimensions are listed on gmcpauls website.

Horkeys show deck is the way to go if you want the best of both worlds.

They make floating floor kits that sit ontop of steel floor looks like real wood floor
