What are the best tools to carry?
Just want to get a poll of what tools /parts you carry in your truck at all times for roadside emergencies. Trying to put something together for mine.

Long handled, flat screwdriver.
My snap-on ratcheting screw driver with spare/different tips in the handle. A combination 9/16", 1/2" box end wrench. You can do a lot with those (assuming you have a spare, jack, and lug wrench which you are crazy to leave home without)

I have a small Craftsman kit that I carry. I forget how many piece but I got it for $90 or so when they were 50% off. Will be picking up another if I ever finish the project.

Truck is a toy and will never be more than a 100 miles from home. With that said when I drove her 400 miles home from Utah. I had misc sockets a bottle jack, 4 sided tire iron, duct tape ,zip ties, cresent wrench,screw drivers etc....

I have, jack, tire iron, crappy tool box with assorted parts missing, shovel, original spare, not so original spare... extra lugs, belt, costco case of 10w40. And remember to never forget your towel, its mainly my lumbar support. Oh and an extra folding chair in the bed... kinda running out of room in the thing, only if my cardboard glove box hadn't disappeared over the years think of all the stuff I could stick in there...

Except for not carrying a torque wrench, I can practically do an engine rebuild while on the road.
The other truck has a Craftsman tool kit with a few additions to it. Also, each truck has a flashlight, safety vest, & gloves in the cab. The flashlights have spare bulbs with them & I check the batteries periodically.

Since I drive a lot on long country roads, I learned a long time ago (40+ yrs) to always carry tools in all my vehicles.
In my 68 GMC I have a small tool box under the seat with every tool I need for emergency repairs. Screw drivers: flat and phillips Wrenches both open and box end: 1/4, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8 etc. 8" crescent 3/8 wratchet with assorted sockets: 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8 wire cutters pliars, vice grips other assorted tools like electrical tape, scissors, magnet, small knife. led flash light (glove compartment) fuses (glove compartment) extra filters (glove compartment) |

In my truck...a daily driver I have the following.
Cross lug wrench bottle jack large flat head small flathead med phillips head 9/16 combo wrench 1/2 combo wrench large and small vice grips dizzy wrench bailing wire Jumper cables cap/rotor battery clamp 2qts oil 1qt power steering fluid 3 feet heater hose 1 BFH tire plug kit 1 gallon 50/50 coolant 2 long spark plug wires extra fan belts 1 flexy radiator hose....plus other stuff too. ...this all gets kept in a 12inch wide Tractor Supply tool box on the bed. Yes it's a lot of crap. I drive that 70 EVERY day. Sometimes 200+ miles at a clip. I am not trying to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. almost forgot...U-joints and some sockets to drive them in and out. Last edited by Davetopay; 05-07-2010 at 04:47 PM. |

jumper cables was the only thing I carried in my truck, seems no one carries them any more use to be everyone had a set in thier car.

I carry couple gallons of water, one time use socket set, wrenches, screwdrivers, punches to take a carb lever off incase float gets stock, oil, and rags. Still no spare tire. On a long trips I also carry a jumper just incase.

Another thing to carry, along with whatever tools you decide, is a headlight dimmer switch. They are cheap, easy to replace, and if it fails you have no lights.
I have had this happen to me twice in 2 different vehicles. The first was many years ago in my first car....and it took me a while to figure out what was wrong. The second was just a couple of years ago on a road trip to a NASCAR race 250 miles from home, but I was prepared that time. A few of the others have mentioned fuses, a "universal" radiator hose, and at least the belt that runs the alternator...all good things. You can keep them in a fairly small box under the seat.

I carry a spare HEI module and everything to install it. I even have one of these LED lights that you wear on your head just in case my module goes out at night.
