72/69 K10 project "Big Dreams"

Hey guys...thought i would go ahead and start a build thread. it will be a long slow process but maybe one day i will get it to where i want it. the frame of the truck is a 69 and the body is a 72. this is my second 67-72 chevy truck i got 72 c10 long bed when i was 14 as my first truck. i sold it when i was 15. ive wanted a 4x4 one ever since. im now 21 and finally have one. this will be a slow build due to me trying to get through college and all my other hobbies. Now to the truck

the body is a complete rust bucket.
but mechanically solid i drove it 2 hours home
it has a 355 and a granny low 4 speed
4 inch lift kit
35x12.5 goodyear wranglers

my main goal for the truck is a weekend driver to play and beat on so the rough body doesn't bother me much. i would like to completely restore the frame and drive-train then just put the old body back on and drive it

since i bought it i replaced the rubber brake lines from the frame to the front wheels

Re: 72/69 K10 project "Big Dreams"

this past weekend i got to work on it some more. the rear bumper was barely hanging on and the receiver hitch was mounted very sketchy so i removed them and some old exhaust brackets. the plan is to build my own bumper/receiver hitch. i think one of the leafs on the driver side might be broke because it leans really bad that way on the back what you guys think anything else that might cause this?

it looks like the bed is what is leaning, not the truck.

Re: 72/69 K10 project "Big Dreams"

took her out to play in the snow and now she is setting in the yard broke. i got stuck in a snow drift and went to back up. put it in reverse and let off the clutch and it jumped out of gear. the motor still runs good but the truck wont move. the clutch pedal goes to the floor and wont come up unless you pull it. and you can put it in any gear with the motor running and not pressing on the clutch. what did i break? and its not the drive shafts. it took us 3 hours to get it out and back in the yard

Cool truck! After you fix what you broke, I would just keep the truck the way it is and use it how you want. It is all the same color, and parts of it aren't falling off too bad. Nice score!

thanks man!

i havent messed with it since i pulled it in the drive. its -5 windchill and we have about 12 inches of snow right now. i hope it is an easy fix. i'm wore out form just getting it to where its at. we have another snow day tomorrow so might get it maneuvered into the shop. if not it will be the weekend before i can get a look at

Re: 72/69 K10 project "Big Dreams"

Have you checked your clutch linkages and the clutch fork yet? Maybe the fork is bound up on the throw out bearing holding the pressure plate and causing your clutch pedal to not want to come back?

but if its just the clutch shouldn't i be able to shut the truck off and put it in gear and start it to make it go? cause that wont work...we already tried that and put the transfer case in all positions and wouldn't go that way either

If it is the clutch fork jammed on the throw out bearing the clutch may not release and you won't transfer any power through the clutch and you can't go anywhere.

Welcome from another Kansas member. Did you just get that off of craigslist? I swear I had seen one in the past month just like that. Good luck with the truck. Trevor

You would be saving time for yourself just doing it all now. If you can swing it, that is what I'd do. You may not need front springs, but then again every one builds them, springs, differently and who knows which springs you really have on there now.

ya i will probably just save up and get the kit....hopefully my tax return will be enough... the kit is only like $615 or so from rough country but shipping is $85 so i'm going to go try to talking to a local shop because he is a rough country dealer and see what he can get me one for.

Re: 72/69 K10 project "Big Dreams"

School and work got canceled today so i got to do some more work on the truck.

Got the seat pulled out and floorboards all cleaned up. i sprayed the area under the seats and the hump with semi gloss black and the area where your feet go with primer. i plan on buying some of that bedliner in a rattle can to do the are for you feet.

I also started cleaning the area on the back of the frame rails where the previous owners welded on bumper brackets.

Fixed a minor gas leak also and cleaned all the snow and ice out from under neath it

Bed have stake holes? Add some shallow stake sides and you have my wet dream for a farm/hauling truck! It is wide, but the extra room could come in handy.

yes it does have stake holes...i plan on making some so i can deliver fire wood with it, but with the broken leaf springs cant haul anything yet. so stake sides are in line behind the new lift springs for now
